About Hull History Centre

Hull History Centre brings together the material held by Hull City Archives, Hull Local Studies Library with those held by the University of Hull. The building of the Centre follows a £7. 7m grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Hull History Centre Description

The Hull History Centre brings together collections of local, regional and national importance relating to the city of Hull and the surrounding areas.

The City’s borough archives date back to 1299 and are amongst the best in the country. We also hold records relating to the port and docks of Hull; papers of companies and organisations reflecting Hull’s maritime history; World War 2 records; papers of notable individuals including Andrew Marvell, Philip Larkin, Amy Johnson and William Wilberforce; records relating to local and national politics and pressure groups; a large Slavery Special Collection; and over 100, 000 photographs, illustrations; maps and plans, newspapers, special collections and reference sources relating to Hull and the East Riding.

Please note: We will not be able to respond to research enquiries on Facebook. Please direct all of your enquiries to hullhistorycentre@hcandl. co. uk

Brooklands Photographic Society will once again hold their annual exhibition at the Hull History Centre in March and April. Brooklands PS is the Hull area’s largest photography interest club and meet for 46 weeks of the year at the Methodist Church in Sutton on Hull.
This year’s exhibition features over 120 images taken by the club’s members and every member who submitted work for the exhibition has had something accepted for display. All subjects are covered and the standard... this year is particularly high. The exhibition runs from March 17th to April 4th (see www.hullhistorycentre.org.uk for opening times within this period).
Last year over 600 people came to see our exhibition and we are hoping for as many people to attend this year too.

Happy New Year to all! One of our 2020 resolutions is to read more, just for the pleasure of it. And to kick us off with some inspiration we have a very prettily illustrated blog from the 'Unlocking the Treasurers' project. Check it out at http://hullhistorycentre.blogspot.com/

Ding dong merrily on high... and Rocky is certainly high indeed perching on top of the Christmas tree to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! A new year in which he hopes to see you here at the History Centre!

Today is our final day of opening before Christmas and Rocky is doing a little last minute festive research in the Hull Daily Mail Christmas annuals & look at their festive front covers! The Hull History Centre shall close at 4.30pm today and reopen as usual at 9.30am on Thursday 2nd January 2020.

To thank all the staff at the History Centre for their help during his month of festive research Rocky is serenading them with a few renditions of some classic Christmas carols in front of the Christmas tree… what can I say that raccoon can hold a tune!

Christmas is a time for goodwill and cheer – what’s not to like? Well Rocky has found Winifred Holtby’s article ‘The Christmas Temper: Goodwill and Bad’ suggests rather a lot actually, as Christmas is a source of great stress for many! Take care of yourselves and each other! (Ref L WH/2/2.12/04/13b)

Rocky the Researcher’s looking for inspiration for what to cook for Christmas dinner. This Army Service Corps Christmas Dinner menu held at the Star of Italy Restaurant, Alexandria, is making him super hungry, is it too early for lunch? (Ref C DINH/2/5)

Today is Christmas Jumper Day and staff at the Hull History Centre are getting in the festive spirit by donning their favourite festive knitwear. And even Rocky remembered to pack his Christmas jumper for the trip!

User

Oh no! Rocky the Researcher has discovered some terrible news… A Merry Christmas is dead! Or rather, a Mary Christmas is dead as this burial register of the Northern Cemetery shows. But fear not the Christmas spirit lives on!

User

Rocky is back in the search room today and he is getting inspiration for gift ideas from gift catalogues of the Humberside Supply Catalogue Company from the 1930s-1950s, and what a collection of indulgent treats they had on offer…

User

Rocky the Researcher is having a little peruse of our book sale hoping to discover a gift he can send to his Great Aunt Reenie for Christmas… & look what he’s found… a variety of Christmas journal’s, how festive! What a pleased little racoon he is, he’s not only found a thoughtful gift but a bargain to boot! Now which one to send to Reenie and which one to keep for himself?
