Well done to rotational midwife Gez Spink, who works at Hull Women and Children's Hospital and has been nominated for a Moments of Magic award which recognises excellence in our staff.
Here's what rotational midwife Emily Cook had to say about Gez in the nomination.
"Gez stayed late on her shift to ensure she was present during the emergency caesarean birth of a woman she had been caring for, giving her reassurance at a time of high anxiety for her. ... "Her commitment to her work and the women and families she cares for was perfectly demonstrated that day, aiding with a smooth transition in a handover of care and providing continuing support to the patient at a difficult time."
Thanks for everything you do, Gez.

We're celebrating great teamwork in our Moments of Magic award this week, our monthly recognition of staff who go above and beyond their duties. First up is Janet Coggle, who works on Ward 14 at Castle Hill Hospital, and was nominated by ward sister Kirsty Martin.
Here's what Kirsty said about Janet.
... "Janet was taking the 154 bus home form work on Wednesday 29/08/2018 and noticed a passenger was sat slumped on a seat with their head positioned between the headrests. "Janet's gut feeling told her something was not right about the passenger and Janet tried to rouse them and ask if they were ok. The passenger was unresponsive and Janet called for the help of a doctor was also a passenger. "When the bus stopped outside the cardio building help was requested for this passenger and an ambulance was sent for them. There were other members of staff involved in helping this person and unfortunately I don't know their names. "But if it wasn't for Janet's initial concern who knows what might have happened. Well done Janet. X"
An anonymous member of staff picks up the second part of the story to nominate Nursing Auxiliary Sarah Honhold, who works in our radiology department at Castle Hill Hospital, Portering Supervisor Kirk Howard and porters Sarah Rilatt and Paul Staves.
"A cardiac arrest call was put out to respond to a member of the public who had become unwell on the East Yorkshire Bus which stopped and called for assistance outside Cardiology outpatients, Castle Hill Hospital. "The team responded and assisted the gentleman off the bus and onto a portering stretcher, with Sarah taking the key role in reassuring and ensuring the patient’s safety throughout. "A passing Yorkshire Ambulance was stopped and the patient was handed over to the ambulance crew who took him onward to the Emergency Department at Hull Royal Infirmary. "A great example of teamwork and professionalism. Well done and thank you."
Our thanks go to all the staff involved.

We took my dad to the vascular outpatient department this morning and I am extremely impressed how quickly and efficiently our visit was handled.

The sister was very kind and gentle with dad, who has extreme pain in his leg, Mr P Renwick explained things very clearly and was very understanding - a first class service. He has given us hope for the future, the junior doctor was lovely as well.

Thank you all, on behalf of my dad Mr Percy Donner and all the family.

User

Wanted to say big thank you to NHS staff amazing care of me was excellent to me though out my stay even though the staff are over worked and not enough of them and the nurse are not valued enough the nurse made me feel safe and look after me was abit gutted I couldn't eat cake which went round for the birthday of the NHS

User

Took my husband to A and E, everyone was amazing - from receptionist through nurse triage and the medical staff. Nothing negative to say.

Yes there was a wait, but until out government funds our NHS correctly that is unavoidable.

Shame the staff are subject to rude individuals - that zero tolerance policy should be firmly upheld.

User

They run around like crazy .. I don’t know how you all do it .. I’ve just recently had a operation and I was completely put at ease despite the heavy work load that is put on surgeons nurses doctors ect ... would like to thank all in ward 6 .. and the surgeon who has made me well again xx

User

Thank you to the staff who treated my 18mth old daughter after we were brought into the children's A&E around 00:50 this morning by ambulance. She was quickly assessed as having croup and given steroids. The staff were so good with her and very reassuring for me. She was given a TLC bear which has now become her new best friend .

Recently our daughter was taken into HRI W&C with acute appendicitis, the love and care she was given was amazing, I can’t thank Miss Besorevic and all of her team enough, also the nursing staff on acorn ward were absolutely rushed off their feet but still did an amazing job at looking after us. The only downside was there were not enough parent chairs and beds and the poor nurses had to waste time in search of them, if they had more it would take a lot of pressure off the nursing staff.

User

My daughter was admitted on Saturday night following a severe allergic reaction- everyone dealing with her was brilliant- reassuring, cheerful & caring. The ambulance crew, paramedic, nurses, consultants, junior doctors, catering staff, domestic staff, healthcare assistants, etc- all fantastic! Thank you all for making Emma’s first (but hopefully last!) admission to hospital a positive experience. NHS at its best!

User

My dad was taken in by ambulance last night, luckily he's home and ok now. Just wanted to say a huge thanks to the whole team from the paramedics to the drs and nurses and even the cleaner who helped with directions. Amazing as always.

User

Lovely friendly staff on MAU ward today who looked after my sister they made her feel at ease and thank you for doing a great job the ward was spotless as well keep up the good work xx

User

I have never had to stay overnight in hospital and after seeing what these guys have to deal with through the night and day, makes you realise how dedicated they are to their profession. I cannot thank them enough for the care i received. It is obvious they need more staff to make the NHS even better than it already is, but even with the amount of staff they have at the moment they still do a fantastic job. Thanks again Hull Royal.

User

I can't complain about the wonderful care my mum had. BUT if you are short if beds and of staff why keep dying and very old people alive taking up money and beds when they are clearly suffering and ask to die ? Thus doesn't help the patient the family or the person waiting for a bed.

User

Amongst all the negative feedback that we hear about the NHS, I would like to share a positive experience. I was seen at medical outpatient yesterday morning at HRI,special test and blood tests completed, follow up appointment, diagnosis, all within an hour and a half. That's what I call a great service.

User

All the staff on Ward 70, and I really do mean all, were amazing. So patient ( forgive the pun) and willing to help in any way and always with a smile. They also realised I was a retired nurse and as such, treated me as an intelligent human being.

Sadly that all changed when I went to the discharge lounge! Not wishing to wait for hours for my medication, some antibiotics, I was able to organise them with my GP. This clearly upset the Sister who obviously thought I was totally incapable of seeing to myself. So much so, that she asked me “ How did I know what had been done to me” ! I found this very demeaning and totally unnecessary. I did not expect this attitude. Some patients are capable of organising themselves and do know what is going on. Perhaps this should be recognised.

User

After completing my ward shift on Monday at 8pm I didn't expect to find myself returning 3 hours later via emergency ambulance strapped into a scoop, following a fall down my stairs at home (Top to bottom). I spent the night in ED & would just like to thank everyone. The Ambulance crew, the consultant who saw me in the corridor, the xray staff & the staff in the department for the care they gave me.

User

Had major surgery on my hand then stayed on ward 6 for the best part of a week. The staff work endlessly from start to finish and I'm forever grateful for the service X

User

Staff we’re perfect, but the hospital itself was unorganised. Waited in a corridor with around 20 other patients as there was no beds. Had to be wheeled outside in the freezing cold over curbs and bumps with a spinal issue to go for an mri scab.

The staff really are a credit to that hospital they are the only people keeping that place together.

User
