Dating is all about getting to know someone - and letting them get to know you. So don’t worry about trying to ‘perform’ or impress them loads - just be honest, and try to relax!

User

We can put so much pressure on ourselves to get dating right that sometimes iit’s easy to forget that it’s actually supposed to be, well, you know, fun. Sometimes you can get the best results from just relaxing and trying to enjoy yourself.

User

We often think of being ‘grown up’ in relationships in terms of milestones - moving in, marriage and so on. But really, the important stuff is how you talk to each other, how you resolve conflict, how willing you are to discuss your feelings.

Being open with your feelings is one of the most important parts of any grown-up relationship. It’s crucial if you’re upset about something or want to discuss a potential problem.

Time and place are important when it comes to big conversations - and that includes coming out. It’s a good idea to tell people at a time and place when you’re feeling comfortable and can talk freely. And it’s not usually a good idea to come out during an argument or when you’re already feeling particularly emotional - this can confuse things. https://buff.ly/2vQXPVk

Even in today’s more accepting times, coming out to family and friends can be a stressful and scary experience. You don’t have to come out to everyone at once - sometimes it’s a good idea to talk to one or two people that you particularly trust first.

My boyfriend and I were going through a really rough patch so we decided to give this a go. I did a few live chat sessions which was very easy and quick. I waited about 10 minutes to get through. The counsellor was really friendly and easy to talk to. I got some great advice and even some tips and practical things to try. We made sure we tried everything and its actually worked wonders.. We are in a much better place now.

User

review about counsellor recommended by Relate, despite representing charity or use the name of charity is a question mark, the counsellor was more interested in financial gain than supporting with the issues raised, not a single piece of advice given , mercenary approach to the whole work of relate, very disappointed , the committee of Relate seriously need to examine the practices of counsellors utilised by the charity

Well. What a waste of money and a con. Me and my partner booked into relate and got told they could help us made full disclosure that we both (male) had physical fights as Well. Got to second appointment she stated because of the physical fights we should have separate appointments for a couple of weeks and then joint appointments. As we were not talking as well. So I get a phone call from relate who asked me to make an appointment and agreed that my partner should be booked in first. I agreed to this. They asked if I could pay for it. I said ask him. They phoned me back and said to keep the appointment i had to pay for it. So to save any issue I paid. We had another argument and so I contacted relate to ask if he was going to the appointment or not as if he was not going I would get my money back. They said we can't tell you and kept that stance. Knowing that if I cancelled and he did turn up there would be an issue and if I did not cancel and he did not turn up i would lose my money which would cause an issue. I asked them to solve this as either way they had caused the problem by making me pay. Then hiding by the Data protection act. So I kept putting this to them until it was to late to cancel. I was insistent with them about this but they would not budge. So I asked for their data protection officer address and their complaints procedures. He constantly refused to give me address and at one point told me to watch my tone. I was frustrated or rude and so I asked the other people with me if I had a tone. They replied no. I asked again he refused. I later on contacted Doncaster who immediately were helpful and sent me the details I needed. My partner did turn up to the meeting and was subsequently told they could not help us because of the physical fighting. Which was the reason for the independent meetings. So basically we have shelled out 150 quid to be told they will help now won't. It's amazing they can't get hold off the money quick enough. Appalling attitude misled purely for money. Oh do i get my appointment. No they haven't even told me.

User

Totally unhelpful experience - counsellor did not listen before jumping in, she did not wait until she understood the issues, was judgmental and rushed to suggest 'solutions' which were actually quite damaging as well as inappropriate.

User

Soo disappointing. The quality of counselling was poor. I honestly wondered if it was a joke. The counsellor kept telling me that I really needed to sort it out as it wd only get worse. Erm, yes, that's why I booked an app't. I kept saying I wanted to look at my responses in the conflict to see how else I cd handle it - and the counsellor suggested I read a popular psychology book called why woman talk and men walk (?). Honestly, I've had more skilled counselling through a friend. Terrible waste of money.

Relate was founded in 1938 as The National Marriage Guidance Council by a clergyman, Herbert Gray, who was worried about rising divorce rates. I think he believed this was a bad thing. The annual number of divorces in the 1930s was about 4,000. In 2013 it was 130,000.

Then about 25 years ago they changed their name to the vanilla and feebly titled ‘Relate’.

The National Marriage Guidance Council, as a title, conveyed the impression that as a country we valued marriage and that it might be a good idea to sort out one’s differences rather than head to the divorce courts.

It would appear that these days Relate have totally different agenda. After both my wife and I had attended several full-price face-to-face sessions, the counsellor suggested to my wife that as I was an entrepreneur and not an employee, with time-sapping businesses to run and a relationship in crisis, she should separate from me and go seek a better relationship with someone else.

Despite our differences we were both horrified, so our case is now closed!

It would appear the original intention of the charity has been hijacked, and that based on creating “better relationships” they now advocate wrecking rather than saving marriages.

Don’t be under any illusions that if you are married this service will help you.

Both of us are now more determined to make our marriage work without any more “help” from Relate.

Just tried ringing this morning to make and appointment, they basically said they won't help me, and hung up on me, I rung back and she hung up on me again. (Scottish ladie). Currently on hold waiting to get through even though I know she isn't busy and is just ignoring my call.

Edit: spoke to her again, she denied hanging up and refused to give name.

I WORKED AS A VOLUNTEER IN A RELATE SHOP..WERE THE STAFF WERE CAUGHT STEALING.YET THEY STILL WORK THERE .TAKEING CLOTHES TO A 'CASH FOR CLOTHES' OUTLET AND KEEPING THE MONEY .I FIND THIS AN ABSOLUTE DISGRACE.SAME STAFF CAUGHT STEELING ...YET STILL WORK THERE..FEEL REALLY LET DOWN..AS NO HELP OR SUPORT WAS GIVEN .THE THOUGHT OF LOVLEY GENEROUS PEOPLE DONATING TO RELATE BEING SWINDLED IS PRITTY LOW.

Have no confidence in relate at all told them confidentially why I wanted to cancel my appointment & they tell the person who I had an issue with the whole thing, so it made everything worse then it already was. Never again will I choose relate for help!

Greedy greedy greedy.... Relate seem to be all about £££££££ . How you can call yourself a charity is beyond me....60£ per hour. that's is 1.5 days wages for me... I'm sure you are happy to help so long as you have the cash to pay.. I'm sure your staff all enjoy telling people that you work for a charity ...you have only put a financial strain on our relationship...GREEDY GREEDY GREEDY
