We had not booked but on a busy Saturday night they were able to fit us in. We were warned our waitress may take 10 mins to get to us but she was very efficient and took only a short length of time. The food was lovely, some unusual vegs by way of a change leeks in cheese sauce, red cabbage and broad beans, made a nice change to the run if the mill peas, carrots etc. The food was hot and delicious and we will be back. Thank you.

We called in on a night out in York with friends. We were drawn in by the cosy, quaint look of the restaurant. The food and service were excellent. I had the mushroom, cranberry and brie wellington which is one of the best dishes I've ever had. Well done chef. Highly recommend this restaurant.

Want to the restaurant with my mother. There was a small queue as we approached the restaurant. A lady in front of us had been there before & said it was a sign of somewhere good; she was so right! Scottish lady from the front desk came outside & apologised for the wait, which was a nice touch. She was right with the approximate waiting time.

When we were seated, we had our drinks order taken, then as we only wanted the carvery, we want straight for it. There was a lovely banter with the man doing the carvery. There was a reasonable selection of vegetables to add to our meal which we helped ourselves to, but enough to suit our tastes.

The drinks 'hit the spot', as did the food. The gravy was just enough, but I noted that if there wasn't enough, then more could be requested & served to the table. Anyone who served us were friendly & obliging & although it was queued on a few other occasions, we didn't feel rushed to eat & go. The only thing counting against it was that we were at the window seats & when the door was held open it was very draughty as it was cold outdoors.

Although it was slightly more expensive than the usual carvery we go to, it was worth the little extra. The meats I ordered were tender & vegetables well cooked. Along with the service, it was a great experience & would be happy to return & also recommend!

Lovely staff and food was great. Sat by lovely warm fire after a cold days walking. Will return in the near future. Thankyou xx

User

The food was cooked to perfection, and served hot, there could have been a couple more different vegetables though, well worth the money, and the service was good. Will go again next time i am in york.

Me and my husband had the carvery which was really nice lovely lady showed us to our table which was nice place staff and carvery was lovely but thought drinks were pricey soda and lime 230 something for a pint and 3 pound for a small bottle of coke Which filled a half pint glass other than that was nice sorry x

User

First visit but sure not the last. The carvery meat was beautifully cooked and served with proper yorkshire pud and a good selection of veg. Managed to have pudding and we all enjoyed our choices from crumble to sundae to cake. Certainly would recommend for food and excellent service.

User

Fantastic Carvery but they must be running out of meat it was that thin but plenty of sides to fill you up

Did not have to wait long for a table ...the food was delicious..but the waiting on staff left a lot to be desired...the waitress said she would be back to take our drink order but never came to ask us ...so we asked for a jug of water with the meal but it had not arrived by they time we had queued for the carvery and ate it .....but as soon as the plate was empty the waitress was there to see if we wanted any desserts ...needless to say we declined ..and made our feelings known to senior member of staff who did apologise...too little too late in my opinion poor customer service

Carvery. It's £10.95. For this you can have a choice of 2 of 4 meats, but I just opted for because the plates are tiny like a child's plate. They put the grave on for you which is weird for a carvery and with the meat Yorkshire and gravy the plate was almost full. So then you have to cram what veg on you can. Totally put me off. There's not much choice in veg but I couldn't have what I wanted because the plate was so small. The food was nice what there was but please get bigger plates. It's 11 quid! And veg the only great was peas. No broccoli or green beans.

3 of us had a carvery yesterday. The food was nice. Our waiter was friendly & obliging. However our experience was spoilt by the attitude of the carvery chef (knife operator, not a proper chef - he hadn't cooked anything). He obviously didn't enjoy his work. Had to be asked to order more roasties & mash & had we not asked, it seems he wouldn't have bothered. We spent over £50 on a lunch & may have had more, but for his attitude. Our waiter was very apologetic but he shouldn't have had to be!

I'm aware that Russells' is a quality restaurant for carveries & my average rating won't have much influence, but please take note. Attitude & a smile might just make a difference!

We have been coming every year to Russell’s on our annual Christmas weekend in York, for the last 20 years. We recommend everyone who comes to York to visit it for the best carvery. Unfortunately this visit was terrible and because of it, we won’t be back.

The food looked like it had sat there for a while and the meat was ok but not much choice as there was no pork. The stuffing had to be scraped out of the rock hard outer shell

that had formed from it sitting there that long.

There was no green veg apart from broad beans and the mash was in the same condition as the stuffing. The roast potatoes were deep fried and not roasted. The Yorkshire puddings were cold and the gravy a glutinous and gelatinous tasteless tepid semi liquid. Nothing had been seasoned and we all had to add copious amounts of salt in an attempt to make it tasty. The waiter was told and he said he would tell the chef, who I can only assume didn’t care as nobody came back to us. Won’t be visiting again and it’s a shame as it was a tradition in our family, which we enjoyed.

We had to question the bill, about the wine. We ordered two small glasses of red wine, and were charged for two large glasses. _ not knowing the size of a small glass -

User

Very expensive for what you got. Nothing startling. Plain and bland.

Looked really nice as we walked past, so decided to pop back in. Had to wait for a table which we didn't minds due to the number people in York. De used on soup and 2 meat carvery. The soup was awful not seasoned and the roll was the third of part barked baguette. The roast was equally as bad 2 VERY small slices meat, the veg was very sloppy and the grave coloured water., had thought about dessert but then thought they might be the same loon nice and tasteless so decided to give it a miss.felt rushed no sooner had we finished our last mouthful we are asked if wanted anything else and when we said no, the bill was produced so we downed our weakened vodka and coke and left. Don't think will be returning sorry!

User

Had all 3 meats turkey, gammon and beef) all delicious and melted in the mouth. Was disappointed that no pork available. Veg tasted good but very poor selection to choose from. Extra gravy brought to the table. Staff pleasant. Went here as we were pushed for time- all done within 30 mins. Not saying I'd never go back but not in a rush to return. Much prefer The Winning Post on Bishy road

4 of us had 2 course early bird meals. Carvery was sat untouched by any other customers the whole time we were there. We had to pay adult meal for our 10 year old who doesn't like all the meats and only some veg and potatoes. The plates we were given were the same size as childrens/OAP's plates in any other carvery. £76 in total. This was very disappointing for our first visit to York and was looking forward to finding a quirky little restaurant which is what attracted us from outside. If the food was of good quality we don't mind paying but it was nothing special at all.

My sister and I have been coming every year when we meet up in York. (Neither of us live in the city) we missed a couple of years due to ill health but returned today. What a disappointment! Such a change of the standard of food. Tasteless, cold and obviously been standing around for some time. The roast potatoes had been deep fried. Gravy doled out as if it was a precious commodity. The prawn cocktails were just as bad. Tasteless, frozen prawns just defrosted and full of water. No lemon. Carrots? And I'm sure no matter how hard you tried you couldn't have found a smaller dish. All in all after many years we will not be returning. So sad.
