We thought it looked expensive, but given the size of the portions it’s tremendous value and really tasty. I was beaten by a smoked salmon carapachio and I’d swear that I couldn’t buy that amount of smoked salmon in a packet from a fishmonger for less than I paid for the whole meal. I guess that they don’t sell many desserts!

Utterly a brilliant! 9 of us and the service we received from Joe and his team was truly outstanding! As well as amazing food, it was the perfect venue for our special occasion we were celebrating. Great cocktails too �Seriously recommend x

Never been here before not a great believer in reviews.... but from start to finish the service was fantastic...always asking if we we're ok and anything we needed... . Considering they were busy we didn't have to wait to long for either starter or our main..... portions were very generous and the quality was second to none...... I have read some reviews and think some people need to wobble their heads..... for the price which surprised me when I got the bill including drinks was brilliant..... definitely recommend this little gem in the Fossway and will always visit every time I'm in York....

Just returned home after our regular York trip. As usual, while we were tgere we called in on our favourite pub Sutlers. We've been regular customers on each visit and it's always supplied us with a superb range of beers, ciders and our absolute favourite, tiny rebel's marshmallow porter, "stay puft"

It's good to know this has a regular place on the bar. The staff too, always helpful friendly and welcoming, special thanks to Joe and Victor for getting it just right. See you all again soon for another porter. Cheers Alan and Julia.

I came to sutlers on Friday evening for a few drinks and dinner with my Mum, Mother in Law and Sister in law. This was my 2nd visit to the restaurant and it was so amazing, the food and drinks are very good. Food portions are big, the staff are all nice and welcoming but I couldn’t praise the waiter we had anymore. He was amazing. He always came to check on us and even gave us a free round of prosecco to toast my upcoming wedding. I didn’t get the gentleman’s name but he really was a credit to Sutlers. Thank you xxx

Have been a few times. t’s quite a compact venue and very popular so not always possible to get a seat! However early doors (I’m talking just after 12) plenty of space. Barman (he’s from Sunderland) very knowledgable on all the drinks and always ready to make a recommendation. Mixed two very nice gins for the wife and daughter and a lovely rich chocolatey beer for me! Food wise, I can recommend the spicy Cajun chicken burger ordered with extra bacon and jalapeños! Top notch and well worth a visit 👍🏼🍻

Fantastic burger and great chips, did a groupon offer, which was a burger and cocktail for two for 25 quid, and all I can say was wow, I had the 'Return of the Mac' burger and it was fab! I've never had a burger with mac and cheese as a filling and it was to die for! I also had a mojito which was splendid as well! All in all it finished off our little break to York in great style and we will definitely come back again when we visit in the near future!

Fantastic bar. Excellent choice of gins with proper tonics, served in chilled copa glasses with loads of ice and fresh fruit/herb garnishes. Bar man very friendly and knowledgable. Introduced us to some very good local gins. Great location. Very nice atmosphere and spotlessly clean. Didn’t eat as we’d already booked elsewhere, but food looked and smelled great as it was coming out. Will definitely visit again and cannot recommend highly enough.

Fabulous home made meal, generous portion size, best meals in York, I would highly recommend them. Great friendly staff and atmosphere.

As gin lovers this is paradise! The place is lovely and welcoming and there are 120 Gins to choose from! Very enjoyable and very reasonable and all the staff we encountered were lovely xx can’t recommend enough

Excellent service and meal was lovely. Downside was we was next to the cold door, waitress did see if we could move but was too busy so put the heaters on for us. Another downside of us booking a table for 2, but then more people sit down next to you, so not very private!

Ten of us arrived last night after a afternoons racing. I was disappointed there were no cask beers to offer us. The gin selection was good for the ladies but us blokes disappointed with our hoppy substitute! Our starters were all good but again our mains were a big let down, huge platefuls arrived but we were all in agreement they lacked more sauces and gravy. The burgers and meatballs were dry and far too heavy, we all felt let down but the staff were lovely and couldn’t do enough for us. The menu was lacking a wider meat/fish option!

It's very difficult to score a venue when food and service are at completely different ends of the spectrum so I think the bad service has to pull the food score down to give a balanced 2.

Whilst I expect service for 5 people to be a little slower than the norm, I don't expect to be ignored, forgotten, and then pretty much treated as invisible due to the venue having a busy Christmas Saturday (mainly with drinkers and later booked parties I might add) at 3:40pm.



The food was generally very tasty, the spicy burger being particularly nice, but the chicken and carrot stew was a little weird, especially considering the beef and veg content added to what tasted like tomato soup, and having no chicken nor carrot!



The service unfortunately, was worse than terrible. Initially waiting 15 mins for a server can perhaps be forgiven as it was generally quite busy in the venue, but then having to wait a further 10+ minutes for him to find a working pen and write down the 'wine list' was starting to get us to the point of just walking out. Why we chose to stay at that point I don't really know, although it was warmer inside than out so that could have played a part.



Drinks and food finally ordered (it now being almost 4:30pm) we were then happy to wait for the kitchen to cook it, and as the venue prides itself on not being fast food we had no issues with waiting for that.



Minutes before the food arrived to then have someone drop a 'this table is reserved at 5:30pm' sign on our table was a bit of an annoyance, considering our food hadn't yet arrived, but we didn't expect an issue as food was due any time.



Then the food arrived and unfortunately the server didn't know what she was serving so it was a 'look under the bun to see the contents' situation, very unprofessional in my opinion but as the server looked very inexperienced we were disappointed but not surprised.



Then the final nail. Half way through eating instead of the usual 'How's you food?' type enquiry, we instead had a visit from the 'I've got another reserved sign to put on your table and I'm just going to move the contents of your table around to fit it on' lady. Suffice to say that was quickly picked up and thrown under the table.... I'M STILL EATING HERE!



Anyways, review is now done, table is now cleared (no I didn't want to finish the last of my food thanks) and we've now got 25 mins to down our drinks and get/pay our bill. Although to be fair I doubt they would even notice if we just walked out, shame I'm so honest!

Called ahead to enquire about vegan options, told it was all fine. Made a special trip and told no walk ins! Not the first time I've experienced poor food or service. They seem to have a management change this year as I visited before Xmas and it was lovely, been back a few times this year and they've either not had the vegan options mentioned on the menu or we've received money off coupons because of poor quality food, it's just not that good anymore.

Minutes before the food arrived to then have someone drop a 'this table is reserved at 5:30pm' sign on our table was a bit of an annoyance, considering our food hadn't yet arrived, but we didn't expect an issue as food was due any time.



Then the food arrived and unfortunately the server didn't know what she was serving so it was a 'look under the bun to see the contents' situation, very unprofessional in my opinion but as the server looked very inexperienced we were disappointed but not surprised.



Then the final nail. Half way through eating instead of the usual 'How's you food?' type enquiry, we instead had a visit from the 'I've got another reserved sign to put on your table and I'm just going to move the contents of your table around to fit it on' lady. Suffice to say that was quickly picked up and thrown under the table.... I'M STILL EATING HERE!



Anyways, review is now done, table is now cleared (no I didn't want to finish the last of my food thanks) and we've now got 25 mins to down our drinks and get/pay our bill. Although to be fair I doubt they would even notice if we just walked out, shame I'm so honest!

Called ahead to enquire about vegan options, told it was all fine. Made a special trip and told no walk ins! Not the first time I've experienced poor food or service. They seem to have a management change this year as I visited before Xmas and it was lovely, been back a few times this year and they've either not had the vegan options mentioned on the menu or we've received money off coupons because of poor quality food, it's just not that good anymore.
