About The Jorvik Group

The JORVIK Group allows you to discover, explore and experience York’s fascinating history at 5 city-centre attractions.

The Jorvik Group Description

The JORVIK Group is the collective name for five of the most exciting visitor attractions in York.

Beginning in 1984 with the opening of the world-famous JORVIK Viking Centre, the group has grown to include: DIG: An Archaeological Adventure, Barley Hall and, most recently, The Richard III & Henry VII Experiences.

JORVIK Viking Centre is a must-see for any visitor to York, and is built on the site where the remains of Viking houses were actually found, using the latest technology and information to present the historical finds in an engaging and informative way. Visitors are taken aboard time cars that guide them through the reconstructed village of Viking-age Coppergate, where they see, hear and even smell the Viking townsfolk!

DIG: An Archaeological Adventure takes the subject of archaeology, and presents it in a hands-on, exciting way for kids of all ages to get stuck into! No more boring lessons, here you learn as you play; digging and searching through history in specially made dig pits, then using your creativity and knowledge to figure out how archaeological evidence can teach us more about the past. Perfect for school groups and budding young historians, DIG sets out to make learning fun and interactive, with dedicated historians and staff constantly striving to further the efforts of archaeology with the future of society.

Barley Hall is truly is one of the hidden gems of York, having been rediscovered behind a ruined old building in the 1980s. Explore what was once the home of Master William Snawsell, the Lord Mayor of York in the middle-ages, in this perfectly reconstructed medieval townhouse. Each room has been decorated to look exactly how it did over 500 years ago, including the great hall, with its high ceiling and timber frames, which has played host to many a celebration and is also available to hire for feasts of your own!

The Richard III & Henry VII Experiences lie on the York Walls in two of the iconic Bars. Visitors can discover the history of Richard the Plantagenet King, and Henry the Tudor King through interactive displays, presentations and exhibits, as well as an exclusive camp at each attraction. See the impact these two Kings had on the city of York, and discover the hidden details of their reigns, including key battles and moments that took place during their rule.
The JORVIK Group also host a wide variety of events throughout the year. From lectures and talks with academics and authors, to family fun days, themed evenings and even battle re-enactments, we have something to entertain everyone. There’s even the annual JORVIK Viking Festival and JORVIK Medieval Festival, that celebrate and showcase the rich history and heritage of York and Yorkshire through a programme of innovative, informative and, of course, exciting events.

The JORVIK Group is the attractions and events division of York Archaeological Trust, a registered charity in England & Wales (No. 509060) and Scotland (SCO42846))
