About The Yorkshire Museum

The Yorkshire Museum houses five galleries showcasing some of Britain’s finest archaeological treasures and many rare animals, birds and fossils.

The Yorkshire Museum Description

The Yorkshire Museum sits in the heart of the York Museum Gardens in the centre of York.

The museum was opened in 1830 by the Yorkshire Philosophical Society and was one of the first purpose-built museums in the country. On 1 August 2010, the museum reopened following a nine-month £2 million refurbishment project.

The museum houses five galleries showcasing some of Britain’s finest archaeological treasures and many rare animals, birds and fossils, in exciting displays with changing exhibitions. There are also regular events, lectures and activities to enjoy.

Yorkshire’s Jurassic World exhibition was amazing. I thought the VR seeing through the real Jurassic World by feeding Alan the dinosaur was strange and amazing by my eyes and went underneath the dinosaur and that’s the children favourite from the new exhibition. 🦕🦖

User

Went to jurassic world exhibition today. The kids, age 3 to 8, loved it. Spent two hours there doing crafts and playing with dinosaur toys upstairs then going round the exhibition. Yes it's popular at the moment so we queued for a while both to get in and for the virtual reality headset (but there was a coffee cart next to the queue outside!). It isn't the national history museum but the team have done a good job with the space available here. £7.50 for adults and kids go free seemed good value.

User

We had a fantastic time at the museum. We visited yesterday (1st of June ‘18), were they had a Roman workshop on. Our boys (7 & 3), made a standard and were signed up to the Roman army! Admittedly, you have to have some degree of interest in Roman history. Both myself and my 7 year old loved it. After wards, out in the garden, we came across two “real” centurions! Made his. Lovely museum. Small, but very well laid out. Definitely would go back again. Thank you for the warm welcome and friendly atmosphere.

User

Visited the museum for the first time in years today and had an awesome experience! Unfortunate to see the peoples’ expectations weren’t met following the marketing for the Jurassic exhibition as in and of itself I thought it was great. Have fond memories visiting the museum as a dinosaur-obsessed kid and being amazed by the moving dinosaurs - seeing another kid having the same experience with the VR today was very cool! Overall the museum is excellent value, packed with fascinating local info and a lot of fun for anybody interested in Yorkshire history - I grew up down the road in Selby and my partner is from Canada and we both deeply enjoyed a spontaneous visit!

User

This museum was quite remarkable, and my only disappointment was that I did not have more time to spend there. The exhibits were high quality and it was obviously well curated. I especially appreciated the mosaics and the information cards were extremely helpful. I'm so glad I didn't miss it!

User

Really interesting museum. Kept myself and my 6yr amused for ages!

User

Had a fantastic family day out yesterday at The Yorkshire Museum in York. Lots to see and do for the children, they loved the dressing up! Thank you for helpful staff, we will be back!

User

Fantastic museum!! Plenty of things to keep children entertained and made the educational side of the museum fun and interesting for them. The staff are out of this world, very helpful with any enquiries you may have and they go out if their way to make sure you enjoy your time there. Thank you ! We thoroughly enjoyed our time visiting and will no doubt return at some point in the future! ☺

Tbh we was put off by the reviews of the jurrasic exhibition.... Some of the reviews on this have been as I can see, rather childish!! For a small museum the exhibition was fab and magical.. Was really suprised with the vr experience it was quite magical too!! I do think some of the reviews were based on this being like the NHM in London!!... The reason I have given 4 stars is the lack of a dry picnic area... We saw people eating around the museum and we felt uncomfortable doing this so we had to park in the gift shop and buy the most bad coffee ever... Which is a shame due to the young lady trying to talk to it sweetly to make it work and dispense!! Even a few gazebos would have sufficed..if we had been on a non raining day the gardens would have been lovely to picnic in....

We shall return!! But will next time buy coffee outside

User

Lovely, clean spacious museum. We took 4 children here today including 2 toddlers and we spent around 2 hours in the museum and another hour or so in the museum gardens. I didnt feel stressed or worried that the children would get lost or touch anything they shouldnt. We could have easily spent another hour inside had the weather been poor (to do the crafts upstairs.) There was a lot that the 3yr olds could touch and see with plenty of things at their level and the older children (7&9)loved the dressing up area and learning about the old coins from one of your staff members. For the children we brought the dinosaur exhibit was fun enough, but I can see why some of the reviewers here are disappointed with the dinosaur aspect (as it is a small portion of the exhibits.) Overall a good value for money day out!

User

Interactive and entertaining, it was much bigger inside than we thought. The gift shop was nice.

User

Museum has different exhibits. But most are small. Bit pricey for the size of the museum, been to better for free. Museum gardens are lovely.

User

Disappointing that the Jurassic World exhibit wasn’t as dramatic as it used be with moving dinosaurs. Will go down to London for this.

User

Waited ages to get in whilst surrounded by people's unruly kids running amok! When we got in there was not that much that was interesting. We were in and out in half an hour and were robbed of £15! Of the 522 pictures I took over 4 days in Yorkshire - 10 were of this museum. That says it all really ! York Castle Museum was so much better.

User

Hate to be negative but the Jurassic World thing is so bad!! The amount of advertising around York I expected so much more! Waste of £15!

User

We went to the Jurassic world event, my son is 7 and crazy about dinosaurs but it was a big let down. It was nothing like the advertisements made it out to be, my son was very disappointed! I would not recommend this event!

User

Travelled from Lincoln with my 2 dino mad son's and mum specifically for the Jurassic world exhibition which claims to be "major". 5 mins in and I keep stating that it must get better, Sir David Attenborough opened it!!! A further 5 minutes later and I was amazed... mainly because I had just spent £15 and the show was over, with no dinosaurs in sight! Your leaflets and marketing covered in dino's are nothing but false advertising. Super disappointed, especially when York is brimming with so many fun activities that I could've spent my money on instead.

User

The Jurassic exhibition was terrible. Wish we hadn’t bothered. We have a 4 and 6 year old and we’re excited about the dinosaurs. They were very disappointed. They were not engaged by any of it and so were bored. Expected there to be some models of dinosaurs at least! Not worth it at all!

User

No dinosaurs at the Jurassic exhibition.

Absolutely dreadful. Described by my five year old son as 'the worst day of my life'.

There was 1 dinosaur skeleton, one sea dragon skeleton, one PICTURE of a dinosaur on a wall, one cgi / hologram type dinosaur and the rest was really just a few fossils. Unbelievably there was a sand-pit type affair, filled with gravel, that I'm assuming was supposed to be an 'interactive experience'.

There was actually only ONE interactive experience in the whole exhibition, a VR headset (couldn't they have stretched to a couple at least?), and of course there was a ridiculously long queue to use this! The kids were beyond bored by this point so we didn't have the heart to make them queue again.

The whole exhibition was massively oversold. We queued for about 40 minutes and spent about 20 minutes inside. The marketing made it seem incredibly exciting - "Experience each Jurassic world as the colossal creatures and their surroundings are brought to life using the latest research and ground-breaking technology." - it was none of this!

Of the 522 pictures I took over 4 days in Yorkshire - 10 were of this museum. That says it all really ! York Castle Museum was so much better.

Hate to be negative but the Jurassic World thing is so bad!! The amount of advertising around York I expected so much more! Waste of £15!

We went to the Jurassic world event, my son is 7 and crazy about dinosaurs but it was a big let down. It was nothing like the advertisements made it out to be, my son was very disappointed! I would not recommend this event!
