About York Art Gallery

York Art Gallery holds seven magnificent, newly-designed galleries that display world-class collections of historic and contemporary art.

York Art Gallery Description

York Art Gallery’s collection of paintings spans more than 600 years and works range from 14th century Italian panels and 17th century Dutch masterpieces to Victorian narrative paintings and 20th century works by LS Lowry and David Hockney.

We also hold the most extensive and representative collection of British Studio Ceramics, thanks to the acquisition of collections from Dean Milner–White, WA Ismay and Henry Rothschild and the recent long term loan of Anthony Shaw’s collection.

The building which houses the gallery opened its doors to the public in 1879 for the second Yorkshire Fine Art and Industrial Exhibition, inspired by the Great Exhibition in London of 1851. In 1892 it became the City Art Gallery.

York Art Gallery underwent a major redevelopment prior to its grand reopening on 1 August 2015. The project enabled the creation of 60% more display space, new gardens and a Centre of Ceramic Art (CoCA).

York is one of the most beautiful , warm-hearted cities that I have been to , I spent a whole year while having my MA at York Uni , and through that I come to visit York Art Gallery , it was a great cultural exposure , what I enjoyed the most was the modern pottery structures

User

Two great exhibitions Paul Nash and CoCA, both well visiting. Fantastic environment with lovely staff and great cafe..... could ask for more.

User

This is stunning gallery the art work is wonderfully displayed and there are plenty of seats to sit and contemplate what you are looking at' Lots of hands on stuff to do as well. My daughter and I spent a couple of hours enjoying the peace and serenity

User

Stunning building, only recently refurbished. There's plenty of room for all the paintings, modern art and ceramics on display. The museum staff are very friendly and knowledgeable. Would definitely recommend a visit

User

Spent 6 hours in the gallery yesterday with my family. We absolutely loved it! A world class renovation which breaths new light into all the spaces. Love the new centre for ceramic art, Mark Hearld's temporary exhibition as well as all the other galleries. My children made collages in the fantastic education room. Really friendly staff, excellent shops and a stylish cafe to boot. What's not to like? The admission charge? We live in Leeds and bought two YMT cards. We only have to visit York twice more in the next 12 months visiting the other two YMT museums or the gallery again and it's paid for itself. York residents can buy this half price as well. The price of three coffees - a no brainer!

User

Saw Aesthetica Competition in the Lovely new upstairs gallery space. Haven't tried the cafe yet. Lots going on in terms of workshops and talks. Well worth a look in if you are visiting this beautiful city.

User

Ive been to quite a few culture cities in England,York has everything you could wish for,Art,Culture, what a wonderful place to be,York Art Gallery is an amazing place to visit.Empty your mind, then fill it back up with York.

User

I've visited York Art Gallery twice. Both visits have been a delight. A fascinating mix of styles and well structured exhibits and information.

Although relatively small when compared to some of the large city galleries, York sits at the top of my list for those to which I will return.

User

I would have been content to be locked in for a month or more to give me time to appreciate the delights of the Centre of Ceramic Art. In my opinion it was brilliantly displayed with ample easily accessible information about the work exhibited .The knowledgeable and helpful staff and volunteers were on hand to answer questions and give details. I valued the opportunity to 'handle' selected items and enjoy supplementary reading material with comfortable seating available for visitors. I came yesterday with the Friends of Rochdale Art Gallery and will return shortly with friends and family. Memorable, Thank you.

User

I used to live in York and rarely went to the Art gallery, it never really "pushed my buttons" although I loved to go to other galleries in the region e.g. Salts Mill. I was shocked it could be closed for so long too, whilst the refurb went on. During that time I moved to France, so was keen to see how much it had improved when I first went back a few months ago, and just recently... Brilliant transformation! What was dull is now vibrant and interesting, involves some of my fave artists - e.g. Grayson Perry, Mark Hearld. Colourful and informative display of pottery, airy high ceilings, places to sit and look, view of the gardens, shop with interesting bits and bobs (not enough prints though!). I went back for a revisit and was blown away by the war paintings exhibition. The cafe is also a welcome added bonus, and so good its a local franchise. Well done! I will visit everytime I return now...which will probably be more often than when I lived there.

User

Fabulous space. Loved the Moore exhibition and the associated smaller exhibitions. Picasso pots were a delight. Well worth £7.50 of anyone's money in my opinion.

User

Fabulous collection of ceramics, I visited yesterday and was in my element. So much to see and take in. Have a YMC so will be back for new exhibitions in May. Well worth the money for a YMC so I can visit the museums also throughout the year.

User

Excellent visit yesterday. Staff very friendly and helpful. Several hands on exhibits for children to touch and appreciate.

User

I went to see the Flesh exhibition yesterday. I was really impressed. A variety of medium are used to depict flesh, both human and animal. The description cards would probably annoy art aficionados but for an average art lover like me, they really added to the enjoyment of each piece. Some pieces are a little gory so be aware if you are taking a young family or a vegetarian!.

User

I love art, me. Paintings, sketches, murals, collages, pottery, vases and beds with stuff chucked all about and this place has it all (except the beds with stuff chucked about - Emin's a nutter).

In the words of Brian Sewell "The ground floor photography collage collection is as mad as a box of frogs". He didn't say that. I did.

I went to see the Art of World War I exhibition today 27.3.16 and specifically to see the St John's Ambulance Bearers bronze which is famous because it is famously on the album sleeve of the 1979 LP Setting Sons by the Jam.

Having paid £7.50 to get in, ostensibly to see one exhibit, I was very disappointed to be told (and I didn't try, I asked in advance to be polite) that I could take photographs anywhere in the gallery APART from in the World War I exhibition.

What's that all about please, why the one photograph I wanted to take was not allowed?

Expensive day out for what you get and they found a way to disappoint me in the end.

User

I live in the south of England but born in Leeds. I was really frustrated with the new charges which makes York Art Gallery, for some, elitist. I've been to galleries all over the world: New York, Sydney, Russia and in Europe so I know about admission prices which I don't mind paying if there is value for your money such as at the Hermitage and the Rjks museum in Amsterdam which I visited this month.Whilst the entrance free was about 12 to 15 pounds it was worth it. York Art Gallery in comparison is small and local so I think it's really not been thought out - did you do your homework or research? What about adopting the policy like the Museum of Modern Art in New York: admission is 25 dollars but on Friday from 4pm it's free. Why don't you bring this in so people on limited incomes or students can visit. My good friend works at the V&A and when they started to charge 5 pounds the sales in the gift shop and restaurants dropped dramatically.York Art Gallery please review your entrance charges.

User

Excellent lighting, cutting down those horrible reflections on the picture glass you usually get. Friendly helpful staff.

Such a pity there is quite a hefty entrance fee, depriving the people who really need art from seeing it. Public art collections should be free for all to see.

User

I used to go all the time when free. I went at the residents weekend. The downstairs I enjoyed. The architecture upstairs is beautiful but the exhibit...not so much. I can pay less go to Leeds for me free culture than pay to go in here sadly. Don't know when I will pay to see what they have again
