York Pavilion Hotel Description

A Country House in the historic city of York! When you choose to stay with us you will find everything about the house to be enchanting and different - you will love the décor and design of this lovely building which has been sympathetically restored and developed over the years by the owners Irene and Andrew, to create a warm, welcoming Country House in the beautiful City of York. The 'Pavilion', a small, privately owned and run hotel, owes much of its appeal to the unique atmosphere of a Georgian House so conveniently located within walking distance of York City Centre.
The property, formerly Fulford House, originally a 17th Century farmhouse, was altered extensively in 1785 to form an elegant Georgian house with separate stable block and courtyard. later additions include the present hall, dining room and master bedroom.
The house was once the family home of York businessman and entrepreneur Xavier Prendergast. The theatrical connections of Mr Prendergast, who owned cinemas in and around York, brought many famous names to Fulford House. As well as Jack Buchanan, duke Ellington, George Formby, Grace fields and Adam Faith, Mr Prendergast was responsible for bringing the Beatles to York in the 1960's. His Son, composer John Barry, who now lives in Hollywood, has had a long and successful career ranging from the John Barry Seven film scores such as the James Bond theme and, more recently, Dances with Wolves, for which he earned an Oscar.
In 1988 the property was granted a change of use to an hotel and the present owners, Andrew and Irene Cossins, set about converting a tired and run down house into a Three Star Hotel.
The 'Pavilion' now has en suite bedrooms of individual character, all having remote control satallite television, direct dial telephone, hair dryer and tea and coffee tray.
Our restaurant, which has gained an excellent reputation both locally and with our guests further afield for fine food, courteous and extensive wine list.

Did you know the former owner of the York Pavilion, Mr Prendergast was responsible for bringing the Beatles to York in the 1960's? And did you know his son was composer John Barry? Wonderful hotel! Lovely friendly staff too. I will return for sure!

User

We have just spent the weekend in York at a wedding here. We found the staff to be so kind, helpful and friendly. The room was a lovely size for a family of 5 very close to the centre so we hopped on a bus and did the tourist thing. Great stay and would highly recommend.

User

We had our wedding here last week Thursday 20th July it was perfect a fantastic day. We can't thank all the staff enough they were amazing! The food was absolutely gorgeous everyone commented how lovely it was. Just a massive thank you to Shannon and your team you made our day perfect. I would recommend to anyone to get married here. Thank you all so much xx

User

Today me and my partner visited. We had the 3 course meal at 19.95! It was outstanding, food was perfectly cooked and looked great. The decor is beautiful and the staff was very efficient. Adam is a credit to you we will visit again and definitely be recommending you to family and friends. Thank you for a lovely meal x

User

Lovely hotel staff very friendly, food is lovely all freshly made and hot,, Lovely comfortable room well decorated lovely red hot water for bath (bonus). On main bus route for York so car can be left parked at hotel. A very nice stay well enjoyed 🤗🤗

User

I stay away every week with my job and most hotels are extremely “average” but this is a throwback to how a proper hotel should be. The staff are so polite and well mannered, the hotel is charming and spotless and the breakfast was first class - the attention to detail does not go unnoticed- a thoroughly enjoyable experience and a rare find !!

User

Had our wedding day here and it was amazing. From start to finish. Booked with Shannon who was lovely and made it for us. Nearer the time we dealt with Craig and Frankie. On the day these two were amazing! Can not fault anything. Craig eve has to put my shoes on for me when I change out of my heels thanks for that one!! Food was amazing. Service was too. The cost was in our budget and everyone had a fab time. Me my son and bridesmaid stayed the night before and the room was gorgeous. Only two negatives, plug sockets by the bed would be useful. And maybe have a few bridal rooms with air con? We were baking getting ready. We had the door open fan going and window open and it was still sweaty. You think 3 girls plus makeup artist and hair stylist.. but that’s my only negative. Bridal suite was lovely and we were greeted with a bottle of prosecco and wkd (husbands fav) thank you all so much

User

Had a great room for a great rate direct from best western, fabulous breakfast friendly staff , buses every 10 minutes to york from outside hotel.

User

A huge thank you to the staff and management at The Pavillion for making our wedding day run so smoothly. Craig and the team couldn't have been nicer. A lovely hotel. Thank you so much.

User

We where there initially for a funeral celebration and decided to stay in the hotel to allow us to catch up with family in the evening. The stay was very good the room was nice and clean just had issues with the amount of stairs which affected my parents. The breakfasts were lovely. The only issue I had was the hotel bar closed before 11pm which to me is poor and needs addressing.

User

Very nice hotel with good breakfast. Only 2 km to York center. Was here with my son one week in july 2017.

User

Second visit in a month. Nice atmosphere and friendly staff. Our room was fabulous (no 3) and the breakfast was hot and plenty of choice. The only down side is the small car park which is a shame. Other than that a nice place to stay.

User

Lovely people and warm welcome - room was lovely but a little dated in decor but it adds to the 'feel' of the hotel - conveniently placed for York and the outlet too so fitted in well with our plans - we didnt eat in on the evening as the menu looked lovely but nothing that we wanted so I can't comment on the restaurant but I can say that breakfast was absolutely wonderful - friendly staff and we sat at a charming table for 2 overlooking the fountain garden which is at this time of year very green and well tended - will definitely visit again - well recommended

User

Just had a week staying at this lovely hotel. Staff have been amazing especially as the hotel was full to bursting for York University graduations. The breakfast staff in particular did an amazing job. We were well looked after. Had dinner and thoroughly enjoyed the food and the ambience. Perfect place for exploring York. Half hours walk along the river and you are at all the attractions. The lovely weather allowed us to enjoy the gardens. We would definitely stay here again. Only difficulty is that the car park can be very full and some guests not very considerate about how they park! Overall a great experience. Looking forward to our next visit.

User

I enjoyed my stay. The hotel was well located, easy to find, comfy and quiet and the dinner in the Brassiere was absolutely excellent.

User

As wedding guests attending a 3pm wedding, we were left hanging about for two hours because rooms wer'nt ready. I understand rooms not usually ready b4 3pm but knowing guests are arriving was'nt well organised. Breakfast very nice, but personally prefer buffet style, staff helpful and courteous.

User

Stayed on the 22 and 23 Sep, looked good when i booked, got to say very disapointed with our stay.

Squeakey floorboards in our room, holes in the skirting below the window, stains on the carpet, black marks on the walls, chips on the paintwork and the bathroom well below standard.

Breakfast ok on day one overcooked on the second day.

Barman on Saturday actualy looked in the fridge for red wine, when he eventualy found it it was warm.

Checked out Sunday morning, he just took the key off me, didn't even ask if we enjoyed our stay.

Got to say receptionist on friday and saturday night was very polite and welcoming.

User

Was given this break for a Christmas present ! We have been a few times before so was very excited about going ! When we got there and was shown our room it was down as a deluxe room ! Not sure what they thought was a deluxe room but it clearly wasn’t ! Ask for a king size bed when book too ! But it wasn’t ! So off I go down to the reception to be told it was a deluxe room I told them that I don’t know who puts it down as that but needs training! He said they can move us to a room with a king size bed so he took me off to the old part of the hotel right at the top to a room that has a king size bed ! Was told it was a deluxe too it wasn’t at all ! But with it being late I just took it ! Won’t be stopping again ! Down stairs is lovely but some of the rooms are not so nice very disappointed !

User

Had a single night booked and that was enough, had a deluxe room which was dated. The bed sheet were threadbear, there was a large beetle crawling along the skirting board when we got back to the room after our evening meal in the bar as the small restaurant was full. During the meal I found a small piece of plastic in my garlic and parsley butter ( Maybe packaging ). Only one barmaid and she was waiting on tables too so had to wait to order food and drinks. Heating was very loud.
