It's great to see our neighbours at York Maze are open again in time for the summer holidays. This year's theme is Jurassic Park, we'd better keep our jets on stand by just in case....
We're loving the summer weather here at the Museum. Here's a useful guide for a family day out here and ideas to keep the whole family entertained. Our volunteer guides and stewards are here from 10:00am each morning, come along and pay us a visit.
As today is Bastille Day Gibson Bear thought we should show the Museum’s Dassault Mirage IV in the sunshine as we remember the French Squadrons that were based here in WW2. Call in tomorrow and see this Cold War nuclear jet up close yourself 👍
Did you know that we are a dog friendly museum? When it's a hot summers weekend you don't need to worry about your pooch. Well behaved four legged friends are welcome here at the Museum, so no need to leave then at home. 👍❤️
Seeing as today is Friday the 13th, it's a good opportunity to share this inside tour of Halifax Friday the 13th filmed here at the Museum by Christoph Berg's Military History Channel.
It's Friday the 13th today. That can only mean one thing. Here's some interesting things you may not know about Halifax Friday the 13th. http://yorkshireairmuseum.org/…/friday- the-13th-nine-thing…/
The RAF100 display has been a wonderful event and the Museum’s BE2c biplane has been seen by thousands of visitors. Here’s HRH The Duke of Kent admiring the display at yesterday’s VIP gathering
We have some Australian visitors with us today from Battlefield History Tours. They have a busy schedule in the UK, so we're really pleased to have them with us once again. It's their 9th consecutive year at the Museum. http://www.battlefieldhistorytours.com.au /RAAF_UK.php
For UK viewers who were wondering how to see the RAF100 events in London today, BBC One are covering it live https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0b9jwww
Gibson Bear has been exploring again. Did you know that the Museum’s C47 Dakota is open for visitors nearly every day? Come along and explore inside of this amazing aircraft when you visit.👍
We're looking forward to seeing the huge RAF Flypast in London tomorrow. Here's a behind the scenes at Horse Guards Parade in London as our team assembled the BE2c for the display.
Good morning! This could be summertime 1940, a Hurricane waiting for the call. In fact, you’ll find our Hurricane right by the entrance as you arrive. We are open from 10:00am, lots to see in the sunshine and the shade #RAF100 #onlyinyork
The Museum's BE2c biplane is now on display at Horse Guards Parade in London. Here's a blog post and a behind the scenes video of the aircraft being assembled last Friday in readiness for this great event. http://yorkshireairmuseum.org/…/blackbu rn-b-e-2c-display-h…/
Behind the scenes at Horse Guards Parade in London last week as a small team from the Museum assemble our BE2c ready for the amazing @royalairforceuk RAF100 event. Be sure to catch it if you’re in London between 5th and 9th of July 👍
Some of the Museum’s aircraft have been outside in the sunshine recently. Here’s our aircraft engineering team moving the SE5a WW1 biplane into the sunshine
Good morning. As we drive to work this morning, take a moment to recall that 102 years ago yesterday, more than 19,000 died in the first day of the Battle of the Somme. Here's a short film from Thiepval 2016. #Somme102 The Last Post - Memories of Thiepval http://bit.ly/2Ni0hfC
Today is the anniversary of the start of the Battle of the Somme in 1916. This blog post shares memories of the Centenary even in 2016 when the Museum were present on the anniversary 100 years later.
What a fantastic place to have on our doorstep, love visiting every time so much to read about and see. The staff and volunteers are amazing, the food is delicious and Very reasonably priced, I love the cakes too. We are so lucky to have this gem and keep supporting it worth every penny for entry.
We went as a family of 7 , the youngest being nearly 2yr old .
Everyone enjoyed it and very good value for money !! The staff are lovely and the food in the Naafi was really good and cheap !!
There was plenty to keep adults and children busy !! We will definitley visit again !!
Thankyou
We visited the museum yesterday as part of a birthday surprise for my dad. We had an amazing time. The people running it are friendly and helpful. There was loads to do and see and well worth the money. Will definitely be back if we are ever down that way again xx
We visited the air museum yesterday and had a wonderful day.lots to see and do and would not change a thing.£10 for adults and £5 for children great value for money..thankyou to all the staff (first class)
We came 12/05/18 With our beavers, cubs and scouts (45 of us in total) to complete our air activities badgework. We couldn't have picked a better weekend with all your activites on, it was a superb trip, lots to do and see, all we spoke to were amazing with all the children (and adults) would highly recommend other scout groups, families or anyone wanting a great day out. HUGE THANK YOU from all at 12th Bury & Ramsbottom scout group
Visited yesterday in torrential rain but there were loads of things to see and do inside. Loved the vintage atmosphere and a real affort has gone into all the exhibits. The NAAFI sold a good choice of food and drinks. Best of all is the museum is very dog friendly.
Visited with my three children today (19, 12 and 10 years) and had an amazing day! Thank you to the two radio operators who took time to explain the equipment to them. Would highly recommend a visit and we will be back soon!
Visited for the first time yesterday - why have I never been before?! Loved it! The volunteers are so knowledgeable and as equally wonderful. Had a brilliant few hours strolling around the exhibitions. Great place for everyone - young and old. Will definitely be going back!
Spoke to 2 staff both of which were very friendly/helpful/talkative. Was nice and clean and we had a good day out, only downside was the flight simulator wasn’t working when we were there, but We understand why it wasn’t
Road trip on the motorbike. This place is amazing. The place is immaculate and from the moment you arrive you are immersed in the history.
The aircraft, buildings and displays are brilliant. All the staff were very helpful, even letting us store our helmets & stuff in the sentry guards hut!
To top it all, we experienced a Spitfire fly over.
Not knowing much about this museum we decided it was a convenient stopping off place for our journey from Scarborough back to the Midlands. It is an absolutely lovely place which has a really good atmosphere to it. We tried the NAAFI too which was serving hot food until 2pm. The museum is full of interesting details and the collection of aircraft was also very good and interesting. At the age of 45 years, I still enjoyed clambering inside some of the cockpits. It was great to see the place so busy, and with the reasonable admission fee, it was well worth the visit!! Overall a fantastic way to spend a few hours. Well done.
Lovely day out , kids can run around and enjoy the planes. Lots of interesting facts. Pay your fee (for the charity) and you have a years pass. Don't let the past pass you bye. This is an interesting and fun afternoon out x
I went on a road trip with my partner and we are both really interested in aircraft so this was the ideal stop for us. I really didn’t expect to see so much for such a cheap price. I was very very impressed. We also had such fun in the simulator. Great day out. I would recommend to all ages. Do not change a thing about it. Many thanks 😊
I hope everyone enjoyed it at the weekend it's a great place to visit
this weekend especially I'm a bit bias as my husband put on the homeguard display in the naffi hope you got a chance to see and chat with him and enjoyed the experience
Had an amazing time at the yorkshire air museum. I found it interesting and even a little emotional. A great day out for the family and there is so much to see. Will definatley visit again the next time we are over that way.
Had a great time today.
The reenactors were both entertaining and knowledgeable, the chap doing the singing (sorry I forgot your name) had a wonderful voice and the York Vintage Dance Group were a joy to watch.
Having the BBMF Hurricane do a flypast was the cherry on the top of a perfect day.
I will be back for other special events (btw I was the chap in the kilt)
Great place well laid out lots of aircraft on display. The whole place is informative & at times emotional. The food in the NAAFI was excellent
Could it fault this place. I'm an avoid wargamer and work for the family business selling historical wargames. We visited today and were met by a lovely staff member who was very helpful and knowledgeable when asked where there were dummies as our son has a mental health condition so gas a fear if them. It enables us to avoid or carefully navigate the site. Our son really enjoyed the planes and learning a small part of history. Well done ;)
We visited the air museum for a joint birthday trip for an 8 and 10 year old boys. We also had two girls 3 and 9 who also joined in on all the exhibits. Being able to be so close to so many planes and assorted vehicles was brilliant. Getting into cockpits, climbing up the inside of a Dakota, information on Bomber command, talking to the volunteer restoring the Meteor WS788 and having a look in its restored cockpit, hearing the Victor roar and the passion of the staff was excellent. Freezing cold day so the hot drinks were good and it’s dog friendly too. Definitely will be back
