Nothing is impossible... some things just take a little more time... Here’s a little story... this transformation did not happen in one sitting, and it wasn’t easy. We started off with lots of build up of permanent dark purple colour and some very stuck blue. In several sittings over the course of a few months we used direct dye remover, a gentle bleach bath, some hi lights, multiple treatments, two trims and several different toners and coloured rinses to make those ‘in betw...een’ colours bearable. Georgia had to put her entire trust in me, live with a few ‘in between colours’ that she didn’t love and follow my instructions on after care and products to the letter. It’s easy to see beautiful before and after pictures and think hairdressers can work miracles in one sitting. The truth is, we wish we could, but we can’t. We are limited by several factors, the most important being how far we can push your hair before it waves it’s little white flag and says “no more!” I wanted to share with you all the truth behind the transformation and the ‘miracles’ that can be achieved. But this relies on you, the guest, as much as it relies on your colourist. It’s a team effort that means committing to the change, following our instructions on home maintenance and putting your trust in your colourist especially during those in between stages and when they say “no more for a while”. It means the world to me when people give me that trust, and in exchange I endeavour to be open and honest about what can be achieved and the cost involved, work as hard as I possibly can and give you the best advice for maintaining both colour and condition. After all, what use is that beautifully coloured hair if it’s falling down the drain when you wash it? Of course, every single transformation is different, but the total cost for this particular one including the essential treatments and trims was £527.75 plus £122.50 for products to maintain the condition in between visits. Would like to say a VERY big thank you to Verity for making my hair look amazing! I hadn't touched hair dye for over 7 months as I lost hope in getting the black out but Verity took the time to chat to me a couple of times and give me confidence in getting my hair back on track. I now have beautiful chocolate brown hair and a fresh cut, 5 hours worth of hard work from the lovely Verity and Alter Ego team definitely paid off, was really enjoyable and restored my faith in my 'used to be' dull hair. Went into Alter Ego yesterday with a very rough idea of how I wanted my hair to be coloured and cut. Verity listened to my basic brief and came up with something that I am super happy with. It’s fantastic! I wanted a drastic change in colour and she went for it. So many salons stick within such boring parameters of what they will do with hair, but not Alter Ego, and I’m so pleased I picked them. Will definitely return. The salon has a friendly and open atmosphere - everyone is chatty and it felt like such a comfortable space. I was relaxed from the get go, and the fact I now have hair that exceeds anything I thought possible, means I’d happily recommend it to friends, family, and anyone that is looking for their dream hairstyle.

Verity is a colour wizard �!! I absolutely love the balayage she did for my wedding!!!! I got so many compliments, she really listened to what I wanted :) highly recommend her for colour xxx

They were both great and did exactly what we all asked for. All four of us had different styles and we all loved them.

To not sound overly subjective, I will simply put it into facts. I have very long hair that is always coloured 2 different colours, keeping that In mind I also like to request colours that are nearly impossible. In the salon they managed to exceed any and all expectations I had for how my hair is going to turn out and that with exceptional customer service and very pleasant atmosphere that made me feel really welcome. Definitely found the Hair Salon that I trust with my hair. :)

The girls are absolutely fabulous at putting you at ease when you have no clue to what you would like done to your hair! They styled my hair beautifully when I was competing in a dance competition and it certainly done the job. I had endless compliments and it didn't even need touching up after the amount of spins I did. Would definitely recommend these amazing girls! Huge 5* xx

Thanks to Alter Ego for giving me a great cut and great customer service. I forgot my earrings and the staff kindly called to tell me and then mailed them to me. My cut and styling were so good, I didn't do my usual wash and restyle the next day, it still looked fantastic. Highly recommend.

Thanks Verity for a great haircut today, will definitely be back.

At last, no need to keep travelling up to Norwich whenever I need it cut.

I’m super happy with my cut and blow dry. I feel like a new woman. Can’t wait to walk into work swishing my hair around tomorrow. Thanks so much Verity, I love it �

I love going here. I went for my first time yesterday to get my hair cut and colored. The owner, Angela is so welcoming and nice. Chelsea, who colored and cut my hair did such an amazing job! Everyone at work was saying how great it looked today and how it looked great on me. I will be coming back and telling my friends about you. Thank you guys!

Had my first professional hair cut in months, here today with the lovely Daryl. The service was great and everyone made me feel very comfortable. Daryl was a dream, she listened to what i wanted and came through like a trooper. We even discussed a colour change. I'm so pleased with my cut, I've already made my next appointment. Really friendly staff, cuppa with my hair cut and he even offered me upstairs to breastfeed my baby in private when we were done!

Cannot recommend the salon enough, all the stylists are fantastic! I must say a massive thank you to Verity who not only gives me a fantastic personal experience every time I visit but took the time today to consult with me on how to style my hair before and after I 'Brave the Shave' this year for Macmillan. Alter Ego fast became my one and only hairdressers since moving back to Colchester. I have had the pleasure of having my hair swooshed by Chloe and Daryl both of which made me feel super comfortable and chilled. Others in the team have helped out with bits and bobs and are always wonderful too! Chloe cut my hair into a bob with wonderful detail and with the guidance of Nick - a lot of love went into that bob. Daryl cut and dyed my hair today and it was super chilled and she did the most amazing job!! Thanks for being such a warm and welcoming team (and for looking after one another).
