There are 8 different B vitamins, all having a slightly different effect on your skin. They are water soluable so need to be topped up every day in your diet. B vitamins help with redness, acne, flaky skin, rosacea, eczema, anti ageing, antioxidant, fine lines and wrinkles, age spots, they allows skin to retain moisture, plumps, heals, reduces inflammation and strengthens the skin's barrier, overall known as the anti stress vitamin.

Vitamin E this week, an oil based vitamin, it is a fab antioxidant with anti-aging properties, helps to hydrate, rejuvenate and moisturize your skin. Contains powerful anti inflammatory actions. Along with vitamin C, these vitamins penetrate deeper into the skin helping to maintain moisture levels and helps to keep skin smooth, firm and even toned.

User

Vitamin C this week, one of the most familiar vitamins but packed full of benefits, an effective antioxidant it brightens the skin, reduces the apperance of signs of ageing, evens out the skin tone and is critical to the production of new collagen. Its a great all rounder especially if your concers are ageing, dullness or pigmentation. Choose concentrated formulas with stable forms or encapsulated forms, an ingredient to look for is L-Ascorbic Acid.

Vitamin C has an abundance of skin benefits including skin brightening, promotes the reduction of fine lines and wrinkles, evens out skin tone and pigmentation, can help with skin allergies and is involved in the process of wound healing. Critical to the production of new collagen, it also helps hydrate the skin. Look for formulas with stable forms (ascorbic acid) or encapsulated Vitamin C to ensure good results.

Vitamin A delivers a multitude of benefits to your skin including factors that we associate with ageing and environmental damage. It helps to thicken the skin's surface encouraging skin cells to behave in a younger way, it boosts collagen and new skin cell production, speeds up cell turnover, exfoliates and resurfaces, reduces pigmentation and smooths out fine lines and wrinkles. It is also very beneficial to those with acne. It can be very irritating in the skin so seek professional advice and always wear a sunscreen.

We are used to getting our vitamins from food and suppliments but bad diets, sun exposure, pollution, sleep deprivation, blue screen light, to name a few, all deplete our skin of vitamins. We now have vitamins in skin care that can deliver optimal results targeting individual skin issues direct onto the skins surface.

If you think you only need to moisturize your skin in the morning, think again. Daytime moisturisers protect your skin against pollution, sun and help to keep it hydrated. New skin cells renew and repair overnight so a great night cream will help these processes and also help to increase collagen production as well as hydrate. Nightly use can visibly improve the texture, tone and look of your skin.

Another common misconception is that oily skin does not need a moisturiser. In fact, oily skin still needs hydration and help with normalising sebum production. Look for products with salicylic acid, lactic acid and/or glycolic acid to help balance and regulate skin moisture levels.

User

If you think you don't need to invest in a moisturiser because they all do the same thing, think again. Quality of ingredients for one is a reason for trading up. Look for ingredients that help your skin to look it's best, protect from environmental damage, sun and pollution.

User

If you think you don't need a toner, think again. It will balance the skin's ph levels after cleansing and prepares the skin to be more receptive to the active ingredients in your serums and moisturiser. Toners can also contain ingredients which can help lighten pigmentation, enhance collagen production and hydrate your skin.

Are you the sort of person that thinks any cleanser will do? Soap and water, wipes. Soap and water strips the skin of moisture and can cause redness, irritation and flaking skin, facial wipes common ingredient is alcohol which can do the same as soap and water and sensitise the skin as well. Use a low foam or cream cleanser which will be gentler on your skin and in some cases more effective.

User

There's a common misconception that 'there's no need to cleanse everyday'. It's important to cleanse to remove make up, dead skin cells, debris and pollution from the surface of your skin so that your skin is able to be receptive to beneficial active ingredients of any moisturiser or serum you use.

Even if you are using high factor sunscreen, you need to be topping up regularly. Apply at least 20 mins before going outside and then regularly throughout the day for full protection. Sweating and swimming will cause cream to wear off more quickly so reapply then too.

User

Back on the topic of suncream, don't use last year's suncreams, they degrade over time meaning they are less effective no matter how often you reapply. Love your skin and but new ones every year.

User

The first part of my last post is supposed tp say SPF50. Thank you Victoria Hunter for spotting it.

User

Clients have been asking if SPF0 is the best sun protection. There isn't much difference between SPF30 and SPF50. SPF30 blocks 97% of UVB rays and SPF50 blocks 98%. UVA ratings need to be considered too, those are the ageing rays and UVB are the burning rays.

User

Most of us don't use enough foundation to achieve the same SPF as a sunscreen alone. If the thought of pilling on the foundation to achieve full SPF protection is a problem, choose a high factor day cream or layer daycream then SPF then your foundation or mineral make up.

Health concerns have re emerged over the use of UV lamps in gel polish treatments, reasearchers in the US had assessed the risk, and said it would take 250 years of a continuous weekly exposure for 10 mins before the lamps would begin to increase the risk of cancer. I use a LED lamp which cures the polish quicker than UV and has no risks attatched whatsoever.

User

Remember to wear your suncream when you are out and about, and remember to apply it to all exposed areas including your neck, ears and hands. Also reapply frequently throughout the day unless you are using a once a day sunscreen.
