Our Kettering store's community champion Liz works closely with her local primary school – so to celebrate World Book Day she invited all 340 pupils into the store to ensure they picked up their free book.
Liz read to some of the classes from St Andrew's Church of England Primary School as they came across in shifts throughout the day dressed up as their favourite characters. Teaching assistant Alex said: "All the children had a great time – it was brilliant. We're so thankful to Asda and Liz for supporting what we're doing. 95-year-old great-great grandad Norman loves the friendly help he gets every week from Wendy at our Llangefni store on Anglesey – and says "she couldn’t do more for me".
Norman, who was a navigator in the RAF in the Second World War, makes a beeline for Wendy’s checkout whenever he's in the store. Wendy asks Norman to take a seat while she scans and packs his shopping for him, before loading it into his car. He said: "She's so pleasant – a really nice person and very, very helpful." Norman told his granddaughter Sam how much he appreciates Wendy’s help and she was so touched she emailed the store to say: "I have never met Wendy but I wanted to let her know how much of a difference her small act of kindness has made to my grandfather." Our Leigh store's wonderful community champion Gwen has volunteered at her local food bank every week for the last five years – and now she's helped them secure a £29,000 donation from the Asda Fight Hunger Create Change programme.
The donation will enable Atherton & Leigh Foodbank to pay the rent at their distribution warehouse, which volunteers say would otherwise have been hard to cover. Gwen says she loves chatting to and reassuring people referred to the food bank during... her weekly visits. She said: "It can be quite emotional talking to the people who come in, but my aim is to make them leave with a smile on their face knowing that support is out there for them. Talking always makes things better." The donation comes on the first anniversary of the £20 million Asda Fight Hunger Create Change programme, which is supporting The Trussell Trust and FareShare. Twelve-year-old Tyree has learning disabilities that mean he struggles to communicate and can find things overwhelming – but his mum Kellie says he's been transformed by a "phenomenal act of kindness" from Mark at our Antrim store.
Kellie noticed Tyree was showing an interest in wildlife and posted on Facebook to see if any of her friends might have tips. Mark, who's a wildlife enthusiast, got in touch and gave Tyree a book on birds that really inspired him. Mark's been findi...ng more wildlife magazines and pictures to share with him – and Kellie says Tyree's getting so much joy from everything he’s learning. She said: "I don't think Mark can understand how much he's unlocked in Tyree. Our colleagues across the country have been busy putting stickers on everything from melons to baps to surprise customers and encourage them to "have a good feel – check your boobs today".
It's part of our Tickled Pink campaign for Breast Cancer Care and Breast Cancer Now, who want to reach the one in two women who don't regularly check themselves. Our Gosforth store's community champion Michelle said: "It was a giggle when one customer asked me what I was doing with the stickers. We had a good laugh about it – it's a really fun way of getting the message across. Hopefully when she got her pears and melons home, she looked at the stickers and remembered to check herself." Asda customer Billy paid a special visit to our Enniskillen store to say thank you to our optician Ross who spotted signs of a stroke during a routine appointment.
Billy, who's now made a good recovery, was in the store to collect a new pair of glasses when he started to feel pain in his eyes. Ross recognised the symptoms during a quick examination, and Billy's wife and son took him straight to hospital, where it was confirmed he'd had a stroke. Billy said: I can't thank Ross enough ... if it hadn’t been for Ross spotting the signs so quickly, the outcome could have been very different. The doctors who treated me said it could have resulted in paralysis if there had been a longer delay in my treatment." Read more: http://bit.ly/2GrEgKo
