Bath Maternity

About Bath Maternity

We are one of the largest providers of Maternity care in the country and deliver over 4, 500 babies every year in Bath, Wiltshire, and parts of Somerset.

Bath Maternity Description

This page is monitored by a Supervisor of Midwives from the Royal United Hospital.

Supervisors of Midwives are experienced midwives who undergo additional education and training and are appointed by the Local Supervising Authority.

The supervisory team is committed to the provision of a maternity service that is sensitive and responsive to the diverse needs of the local population. Women can contact a supervisor directly to discuss any aspect of their maternity care. Midwives can choose a Supervisor that they feel comfortable with, and can discuss any issues they might have, and get guidance and support when needed.

Supervision of Midwives is a statutory responsibility which provides a mechanism for support and guidance to every midwife practising in the United Kingdom. The purpose of Supervision of Midwives is to enhance the safety of women and babies by actively promoting excellence in midwifery practice.

We support practising midwives to provide excellence in care. We are also able to support women and are available for them to discuss any aspects of their maternity care.

Supervisors make sure that each midwife keeps their midwifery skills and knowledge up to date, so that the care given to the mothers, babies and families is of the best standard possible.

NO MORE HATS PLEASE!
We’d like to thank all of the hard-working knitters (and crocheters) that have been so very generous with their time, skills and wool. We now have enough hats for our babies for a while to come, and we are running out of space to store them!

Words cannot describe how grateful Jen and I are to the wonderful team at RUH, Bath. The team that helped us through the long labour (Jodie, Dawn and Zoe) were incredible (and thank you for being so calming) as were the truly outstanding theatre team; decision for emergency C section to baby delivered safely in under 20 minutes. The operating team were professional, caring, personable... the list goes on. Thank you.

And then to Mary Ward. It is hard to express our gratitude. You are, quite simply, a shinning beacon of excellence. Your approach, team work, professionalism, humour and calming confidence was inspirational.

Julianna Dickinson - we owe you so much, your tireless and cheerful instruction has paid off and Patrick is feeding well. Thank you for not laughing when I asked if I should be worried about hiccups!!

Frances and Sammie, you are morale and laughter just when needed. Your instruction too has been invaluable.

Jess and Rachel thank you for continuing to look after us and offering reassurance.

If I’ve left someone out, I’m sorry, it’s a bit of a whirlwind.

To any who read this and are thinking of RUH as an option, look no further. This place is immaculate and whenever any member if staff is with you, you are given a sense that everything will be alright.

Patrick sends his love!

These guys are amazing.

Every single person who has been involved with my daughter & new grandson’s care since we arrived Monday - both on Mary Ward & Bath Birthing Centre have been beyond amazing. Every single person - and they’ve done it all with a smile & lots of encouragement & support. These are the kind of people you pray are part of your wonderful experience. Their care is still ongoing as my D & GS are still in the hospital - I just can’t thank them enough.

User

Thank you so much to all the staff who helped me to deliver my beautiful baby girl Jorgie on 3rd February 2018. Especially thank you to Keisha who looked after me up on Mary Ward the day I was induced, who then was the midwife looking after me during my labour which eventually led to me going to theatre for an assisted birth, in which Keisha again was amazing, I can’t thank you enough. Xx

On December 23rd Aubree Amelia finally came into the world, 11 days late, following a difficult delivery. We were overwhelmed with the care given by the NHS and are so grateful for this service.

Firstly, a huge thank you to Mel D (Trowbridge) who has been our midwife throughout the pregnancy. She has been a wealth of knowledge and we thoroughly enjoyed coming to our appointments!

In labour I was cared for by three midwifes; Louise (Trowbridge), Juliana (Bath) and Rose Barker (Bath). All three of these ladies are a credit to the NHS, remaining calm and professional, supporting myself and my birthing partners throughout the labour.

A special mention goes to Doctor Kristyn Manly who helped with delivery, a hemorrhage and our aftercare. We cannot thank you enough for helping us to safely deliver our beautiful baby into the world! You were fabulous!!

Overall, the staff we met in our time at Trowbridge and Bath were supportive, friendly and a credit to the NHS. They didn’t stop working from the minute they walked in the door and were cheery, working through/on the festive period! We even received a stocking for Aubree from NICU, which really made our Christmas!

User

Massive thanks to all the staff at Bath Birthing Centre on my numerous visits before Florence decided to make her early escape, especially to Biddy who was with me from the start of my labour, she showed no sign of panic when they couldn’t trace Florence’s heart rate or when I progressed so quickly, she kept me calm and I honestly couldn’t be more grateful

User

I wasn’t expecting to go to Bath, but with my daughter deciding to arrive at 32 weeks and via emergency Caesarian, Bath was the plan! And I am so so glad I did. They were all fantastic, the staff in the birthing centre were super wonderful and supportive every step of the rather traumatic way. My daughter spent a further 4 weeks in NICU and again the staff were absolutely fantastic, for her and for us as parents.

User

I was brought to bath by ambulance because it had been over 24hrs from my waters breaking. The midwife who took over was amazing and reassuring, my labour reached 34hrs before ready to push and she kept me going strong. I had to have forceps in the end and would like to say how amazingly quick the team was and so supportive! Being my first baby I was a bit nervous but the team each explained there role and me and my partner felt so reassured. I stayed for 2nights and everyone on shift was very helpful with teaching me how to breast feed. I also noticed and was impressed how clean they kept the rooms and how in-depth they cleaned everyday. My Daughter Lola was born 23/02/18

User

I couldn't thank you all enough for the amount of support , love and kindness during the labour, birth and after care of my son Ellis Benjamin Couch born 27.04.18. The team were consistent and I really feel I made some friends in my time on st Mary ward and the delivery unit. I really want to say a special thank you to my main midwife Kesha, I couldn't thank you enough for everything you have done for me and the emotion support regarding the passing of my mum. I will never forget you !

User

I cannot express in words how incredible the lovely midwives and assistants are here! Everyone I had been seen by could not do enough to support us. From arriving on 24th June for induction to leaving on 27th June to take our baby girl home, to even being readmitted for 1 night, every single person I met supported us in immeasurable ways. Emma Tanner who helped me through labour and delivery was absaloutely incredible and I'll never be able to express my gratitude for how her support and words got me through the experience! She will forever be in our lives and so appreciate how she respected my choices through-out the delivery. Although getting Dr Bob in for an epidural was a pretty good shout (Another fantastic human! Sorry for shouting at you Bob!). Jill on Mary Ward was an absaloute god send to me helping me through my emotional melt downs and giving me breast feeding support when I was struggling - I can't thank her enough! There are so many more amazing staff here I wish I knew all their names to thank them!

User

From the time I was admitted for induction on Friday 25th May to the time we left Mary’s Ward Monday 28th I couldn’t fault the efforts from all the staff. Pre and post natal care was beyond amazing, Huge thank you to all the Midwife’s from the labour ward who were great from the start especially Emma who was there through out the whole of my labour. I can’t thank dr Ed coats enough for his quick thinking and professionalism bringing my Little Freddy into the world via emergency c sec on Saturday. The efforts from the neonatal team were fantastic helping Freddy breath after many minutes of bringing him around. The anaesthetist Alexandra helped me and my partner get through it all and not sure how we would of coped if it wasn’t for him reassuring us and great efforts to make sure I was comfortable throughout the labour and c sec. once up in Mary’s ward I was amazed how friendly and professional the Midwife’s were for the 3 days we stayed in, Always happy to help and made you feel at home. All in all would highly recommend!!

User

From the moment I was admitted for induction on the 5th of July, to the surprise natural arrival of Millie at 5.52am on the 6th of July, all of the staff that looked after us were absolutely fantastic. After a traumatic first labour with my son, I was nervous, but I couldn't fault anything about how I was looked after. Sadly I can't remember everyones name, and I wish I could but thank you so much to everyone in Marys Ward and the delivery suite for making Millies appearance so calm and a pleasurable one to remember. Your hard work should never go unnoticed. xx

User

From the moment I got admitted on the 23rd January to the day our beautiful baby boy Max was born via C-Section on 12th February, all the staff on Mary Ward and all the staff down on the birthing suite have been absolutely amazing and so so caring, thoughtful, helpful and friendly! They always put me at ease and made me feel completely comfortable and made sure when I started to panic they would calm me down! Being in hospital for 3 weeks before Max was born was very hard going but made so much easier with all the friendly and lovely hard working staff in Mary Ward! All the doctors I saw (which was most I think) have gone way above and beyond and myself and my partner Pete will always be forever grateful and you all deserve the biggest medals for all the hard work you do! Thank you so so much xxxx

User

Bath maternity have been fab they really looked after us from the moment we walked in as two scared adults from the time we left as 3. The midwifes and the doctors talked me through everything and were there when I needed them. Very supportive and helpful

User

An absolutely incredible department with ALL members contributing to the confident, effective and professional services offered. There is a real sense of passion about the job they do and how they can help. My partner and I were impressed all through our pregnancy with speed, advice and care received- but labour as something else. I had a difficult time and was in constant need of either care or reassurance which I always got- no matter of time or amount asked. We were looked after so well I feel an emotional bond with many of the midwife and care workers. Incredible work- not enough mind for me to want to visit again soon - but highly recommend this department

Vickie and Alex Free - Harrison Free (the whopper at 9.14!) on 2/7/18

User

Amazing staff, so caring and professional! Our little man Bodhi was born on Monday 2 April and all my midwives who cared for me were awesome! I can only remember Catherine but I had two more during the early hours. Thank you so much for taking care and helping me perfectly to deliver safely. Best wishes, Georgina Charles and boys!

User

Absolutely wonderful so glad to have such lovely midwives for my daughter and also the student nurse .they didn’t just look after my wife but they also looked after me and made sure I was ok and part of it all .i think our midwives are probably the nicest young ladies I’ve ever met .fantastic experience all round .thankyou so much Jodie May and Mallory Cullen for bringing my daughter bonnie mae in to the world.i cant thank you enough for your work xxxx

User

Was blown away by the care and support during and after the delivery of my daughter, Emilia. Unfortunately my induction of labour did not go as planned and I had an emergency c section but I couldn't have asked for a better midwife to help me through it. Tracy Martin...what a star! Thank you so much for supporting my husband and I through what felt like long and arduous labour and for reassuring me when I was scared of going to theatre. Also Evie Margaret who was with me before Tracy, thanks for keeping everything nice and relaxed, it was all a bit of a blur but I remember feeling very well looked after! The delivery suite was lovely (not at all the stark, scary hospital room I was expecting) and we really appreciated the endless supply of tea and toast on Mary ward afterwards! The theatre staff were wonderful when I had a bit of a meltdown and I want to give big thanks to the lovely Dr who delivered my baby safely and the lovely anaesthetist who gave me my much needed epidural! There was so much support after the labour with breastfeeding, pain relief and checking of mine and Emilia's wellbeing. And it was great that my husband was allowed to stay with me for the 4 nights we were there.

The only thing stopping this being a 5 star review is that I found the start of the induction process very difficult, frightening and painful and felt that we were not as informed as we could have been about what the plan of action was, we were fed info in dribs and drabs and sometimes what we heard from one person would be contradicted by another.

Overall though we were really impressed with the staff and level of care especially given the pressure the NHS and its staff are under. Well done guys, keep up the fabulous work!!

User

Had both my babies in Bath, one being last Monday 21st May! I was told i was being induced 3 weeks early so my anxieties were very high but i was made to feel reassured and calm. I had Robyn and another lovely lady help deliver my little girl and i cannot thank them enough for everything they did for me considering i was screaming pretty much from start to finish!! Some midwifes honestly to not get the credit they deserve! The after care was amazing as well - i didn't have a very good experience first time around but would always recommend Bath.

User

Fought with the doctor all my pregnancy because I wanted to trial a Vbac to be told I shouldn’t. Then saw the consultant who agreed vbac would be better and signed off my CHOICE of care. Ended up with an emergency c section and it happened to be the doctor who did not want me to vbac in the first place. She made me feel like a number, had zero interpersonal skills and and gave me the whole “told you so” look. She was rude and didn’t even congratulate me when my little one was born. Recovery wise I never once saw a doctor after the procedure even tho I was in hospital for a week after. The midwives however, were amazing and supportive but did not have enough time to care due to understaffing. I have since had another baby but we chose to go to Salisbury hospital which was a completely positive experience from the off!
