Buttercups Sanctuary For Goats News & Appeals

About Buttercups Sanctuary For Goats News & Appeals

Buttercups is a Charity Kent-based sanctuary that provides a home for neglected and abused goats, or for those simply in need of a new place to stay.

Buttercups Sanctuary For Goats News & Appeals Description

Buttercups very first began when Bob and Valerie Hitch agreed to take two unwanted goats into care in 1989. A few months later, an RSPCA inspector asked if they could accept another goat in need of urgent care. In less than a month, yet another arrived. Before long, goats suffering from all sorts of cruelty and neglect were arriving from around the county. By 2003, with so many goats to care for, the sanctuary became a registered charity. Our Patron is the wonderful and invaluable Rt. Hon. Ann Widdecombe.

Buttercups is the only registered charity in the UK who care solely for the welfare of goats. We rescue abandoned, abused and neglected goats, and we also help animals simply in need of a new home whose owners can no longer care for them or who have been left alone after the death of companion goats. We also help improve the knowledge and education about goat welfare nationwide.

In 2007, Bob and Valerie Hitch received the Elsie M J Evans award from the RSPCA in recognition of their outstanding animal rescue work.

We have about 137 goats living on site, with about another 109 under our protection in foster homes. Some of our goats are rescued from cruel and unsuitable situations and others can no longer be looked after by their original owners.

Our herd is split into two - a main group and a small herd of males where entire billies are kept isolated from the main group until they've recovered fully from castration. Our goats can roam over open fields during the day and have warm, dry, undercover accommodation at night, either in individual stalls or sharing with a close companion. These stalls are cleaned daily by our team of dedicated volunteers and each goat receives any attention needed daily such as grooming, foot treatment and medical care.

"Spanish Dillon", so called because he was supposed to emegrate with his old family to Spain, but sadly they never came back for him. But that's their loss, because he's a great goat! ❀️🐐πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡Έ

Decembers good goat award goes to one of the baby’s, Ickle πŸ™‚ he was perfectly behaved during the filming of β€˜a Secret Santa Story’, having to sit still for almost an hour! And he only nibbled on the script once 😜❀️
The bad goat award definitely goes to Jar Jar, for his unhelpful new habit of chewing on the collars! Thanks to his handy work, we have about half the collars we did a month ago. Picking up a collar and lead only to find it’s been chewed to death by Jar Jar, is irritating to say the least 😜🐐

Yesterday (19/11/17) I took my girlfriend who is goat crazy to visit your sanctuary. We were both amazed how wonderful it was, the staff were all very polite and we instantly got greeted by a member of staff who was very helpful. The goats were all in lovely condition and had a lovely area to roam, we loved the fact the goats were just running around us in the field, we will definitely be coming back.

Looking forward to receiving our adoption pack

see you all again soon.

What a wonderful place to visit. So many different types of Goat.

All wandering in a beautiful paddock. What a peaceful place.

We fed the goats raw pasta! They were so gentle.

Children were walking side by side with the goats, sitting on the grass with them, climbing the felled tree with them. Brilliant fun.

Buttercups is a charity and it relies on donations.

The goats are so well cared, there was even a three legged one there!

Tea, and coffee and snacks can be purchased, there are clean toilets and plenty of sanitation dispensers.

I thoroughly recommend this wonderful place.

Me and my fiancΓ© had the goat keeper experience today and it was absolutely amazing! Goats are my favourite animals so I was always going to love it (haha) but it was just fantastic to get so up close with them all and help feed them, groom them etc. The team there are also fantastic and very knowledgeable! Hoping to go back and help volunteer very soon!

Thanks for a great day buttercups! Xx

User

Lovely place to be. Great for kids, whatever the age! The goats are very friendly and love a relaxing stroke, but will be even friendlier if you feed them with food bought in the shop. Entrance fee is a suggested donation which is great as it is reliant on donation to keep the Sanctuary going. Would recommend to any one with a love of animals.

If there really is a heaven, I hope it looks like this! My only constructive criticism would be to get a portable freezer and fill it with ice creams for the summer months. Lovely, lovely staff and adorable goats. Thankyou and we'll see you soon x

User

I sponsor a goat and have been down from Northfleet a few times. Love love love the vibe of the sanctuary, I always come away with a feeling of enormous well being, such is the healing power of the residents οΏ½. Keep up the good work, it is a truly wonderful place to go and spend a few hours feeding the splendid ones ( love Rupert as he is so cheeky and always wants feeding). I will be back again very soon x

User

I brought my normally outdoor hating gamer children today who were totally won over by the goats. You guys were so laid back letting us roam in the field for a cuddle with the goats today, it was awesome. Thank-you.

I brought my boyfriend to be a goat keeper for the day as a birthday present. We had a fantastic morning and loved spending time with the goats, we didn’t want to leave! Thank you to all everyone who taught us the ropes.

User

Had such a wonderful time yesterday! It is clear to see all the staff love what they do and the goats are so well cared for. Had an absolute blast on the goat walk (even though Natalie was a little naughty haha). Thanks to all the staff, keep up the good work!

Fantastic place. Was made aware of Buttercups via a local things to do page and so pleased we found it. Really nice that it’s so informal, entry by donation, goats freely roaming and the staff were all really friendly. More than happy to spend time and money here and will be sure to return within the next month or so. The goats were all happy and healthy looking. We had a lot of fun x

Amazing place, did the goat keeper experience and can't recommend it enough. People were very friendly and told us all about the goats and the goats themselves were such amazing creatures. Very intelligent all with their with personalities and quirks. Would love to spend more time there but sadly is down in the "other" Leeds! If you're near definitely make the most of these wonderful animals.
