Our 18th century Chinese wallpaper has been quite badly damaged over the years, but it's still possible to pick out small details like these characters. We'd love to know what they might say!
We're sure one of you will be able to tell us what these mean! We're not sure exactly which language these are written in, so tag a friend who might be able to shed some light on it 🔍 Apologies for the side-on pic!

Head to Castle Ward today for an afternoon of tunes on the lawn with the Guinness Jazz Band on the first of our Summer Music Sundays 🎶

User

If you're visiting the house today, you'll see our conservator working on our 18th century Chinese Wallpaper.
The wallpaper was discovered in the Boudoir in the 1980s during a refurbishment and has been badly damaged over the years from woodworm, water staining and plaster dust and dirt.
Graeme is working to clean away some of this dirt to reveal the intricate patterns beneath. Visitors today can get an insider look at how this type of conservation works and ask Graeme questions about his work.

Went down to Castleward yesterday with the kids. It was beautiful!! We loved the walk around the estate, the beautiful trees and wildflowers and the kids loved the bluebell facts . The little farmyard was lovely. The Pygmy goats even posed for some photos and the rooster was chatting away to my 3 year old. Lol. Loved that I got to visit winterfell! Was lovely that we could go inside the Old Castle Ward Tower House which has been so well maintained!

Then we took a walk down to the Temple River and went up to the Temple. The views are stunning from up there and we could see the boats sailing by in Strangford Lough. We took some stunning photographs, there is so much beauty on Castleward. There is something for everything to see and enjoy. We didn’t visit the mansion house on this occasion but that will be part of our next adventure to Castleward...

User

We stayed at the caravan park for 3 nights, great level sites with enough hard standing for your awning on most. Everything was easy to hand and the staff where very helpful and polite throughout the park. The only downside is the toilets and showers, they are functional but dated and really in need of a revamp! I avoided the showers completely! We didn't have enough time to go round the whole of the park on all the trails but we definitely will be back, there was so much on and the music in the courtyard was a lovely way to spend a Sunday afternoon 😊

User

We decided to go for a walk around Castleward on a whim, which ended up in taking the house tour which was probably the most interesting and fun tour I've been on! Karen was our tour guide who was full of knowledge and fun facts about the house! A beautiful house set on beautiful grounds which was complimented with sunny weather. Thank you Karen for an entertaining and enjoyable tour!

User

The only downside was not being told we needed a separate ticket for the downstairs house tour and we were too late for the last one when we went back to the office. Sign posts would have helped us find the temple but the walking did us good. Also the furniture had been moved and everyone was very apologetic but then kept saying you can always come back in a few weeks which is fine if you don't live in England. We will be back one day and visit again as it was a beautiful place.

User

Our first visit to Castle Ward was on Easter Monday and I think it's fairly safe to say we will DEFINITELY be back! What a beautiful place and although an earlier review said the staff were very unhelpful I have to say we experienced the complete opposite! The staff we encountered were more than helpful and really helped make the day that little bit more special. We still have so much of the estate to explore! Already have, and will continue, to recommend to everyone looking for a family day out. Investing in a national trust membership was certainly worth it with just this property alone!

User

I've been to castleward loads of times before, but went specifically this time to do the boundary trail. It is great. Good mix of surfaces. My fav bit is towards the end in the field, I'll not spoil it but suffice to say it's a great track. The gates are a bit frustrating, but I used them as an excuse to catch my breath! As big Arnie says....i'll be back!

User

I live near Castle Ward and am a National Trust member so visit quite often. Firstly castle Ward is a must for any Game of Thrones fan who wants to visit the place where Winterfell was born, Audleys Castle where Rob Stark's Camp was set up on the shore St Strangford Lough and the 'hanging tree' which speaks for itself. I visit Castle Ward regularly to experience the raw unspoilt magnificence of this beautiful place. It transports me to a bygone age. The walks and cycle routes in the Park are well laid out and beautifully maintained. The half 'gothic', half traditional decor in the house is a living testament to the duties of rank, priveledge and a match definately not made in heaven. The history and ambiance of Castle Ward has a magnetic mystery all of its own. A jewel in the Natonal Trust's Crown. Not to be missed

User

Hadn't been in years and visited yesterday for the Open Heritage Day! The staff who greeted us at the entrance were very friendly and welcoming and gave us the information we needed. It's a beautiful place with something for everyone, gorgeous walks and interesting history at the house.

User

Had an absolute ball today like Ed every moment even in the rain still enjoyed it. I agree with what some have said about more food venders and maybe more merchandise stalls would be fantastic hopefully see you all next year...

User

Had a great day here on Easter Monday with the grandchildren, they loved the Easter egg hunt and the play park..did the shore walk and used the mini bus twice up the hill , staff very friendly and helpful.nice picnic areas also. Def good value if you get a yearly family membership ..

User

Great day out. Tour guide for the house was excellent, very knowledgeable and answered all the questions the group could throw at her. Well worth a visit if you are in NI Neat little bookshop near the shop & cafe if you fancy a delve

User

Fantastic day out. The walk around the grounds was brilliant with the good weather, and plenty of nice birdcalls to listen to. Nerd mode kicked in a little around the game of thrones stuff and then a tour of the gorgeous house which made me want to watch downton Abbey!!! Lovely ice cream too from the tearoom. Staff where great and gardens where beautiful. Highly recommended, I will defiantly be back to do the other house tour the we didn't have time for!!!

User

Beautiful place with extensive grounds and lovely walks. Dog friendly which is important for us. We have been National Trust members for some 16 years and enjoy the freedom being a member brings. The only comment I would make is around the cafe. During busy peak times waitress service would be good. Having to queue for 20 minutes to buy a coffee is frustrating and I would think the National Trust could do better. Take a leaf out of coffee shops on the continent where most cafes are waitress served. Also around the toilets. By the middle of the afternoon they are sometimes pretty horrid with soaking wet floor and dirty toilets. An attendant during peak visiting would maybe be a good idea. A fab place and I would recommend the music Sundays.

User

An extra ordinary place where I was lucky to live for 20 years . It's got everything and more surpassing all National Trust properties easily . By the sea, castles forests temples incredible gardens huge mansions etc .Peaceful beyond belief .

User

Why not 5stars?

5/5 for the house and tour. The house alone is worth the visit. The gardens are excellent

3/5 for the "Winterfell" connection with Game Of Thrones. Could have had much more on view of some of the sets etc, props.

Good day out though. Cafe a bit chaotic. No-one seemed to know what each other was doing. Very slow.

User

I'm a national trust member. If I wasn't a member I wouldn't pay the entrance fee. Bit too expensive but the place is nice and has some nice walks. Also noticed that the place has a lack of bins at the play park, especially around the picnic benches. When you bring a picnic to have with your kids beside the play park, you would expect to be able to put your rubbish in the bin

User

We went to Castle Ward mainly because of the GoT sites. On the website I did not find any details on the GoT tours only archery was not on for the days we were in Northern Ireland. We went anyway just to find out there are tours including archery but you have to pre-book well ahead. So all sold out. The staff wasn't really sorry about not being able to offer what we asked for but then the guy held up a A4 copy of the GoT sites around NI - for £5 !!! Unbelievable ripp off!!!

Well, we just had a walk around the beautiful park and came across a tour guide with only 3 people following. He was a funny dude with a much nicer attitude.

Anyway, the park, the tea room, and the weather made up for most of it. We did not know about any house tours though, which I find a bit sad...

User

I visited Castle Ward on Wed 15th Aug 2017 and we enjoyed the game of thrones part and the parks beside the carpark which took around an hour. We decided before we would go into The Sunken Gardens and House that we would get something to eat from the cafe, what a mistake! We waited at least 25mins in the queue and we had gotten no further than the fridge where the drinks are. I then hear a lady at the front of the queue saying to another person, don't be looking for too much food as they don't have much! At this point I was getting Hangry and I was already annoyed at having to pay £2.00 for a bottle of coke which u can get on any other cafe/shop for between £1/1.50. The staff were in no rush and seemed like they didn't have a clue what to be at! I then turned to leave the queue just as another couple behind me gave up and left too. The cafe does not give a good impression to visitors and in future I will bring a picnic and not waste my time!!

User

We paid £27.00 at the entrance gate but when we parked the car and walked to pick up the house tour tickets we where told the house tours where fully booked . People where going ape and demanding there money back as all staff members had walkie talkies but could not in form the gate staff that housevtours where booked out . Total rip off . I emailed and also let my details with the staff but to date I have had no reply or phone call from them . National trust Propertys welcome dog walkers . What dog walker would pay £9.00 to walk there dog in the park lands . RIPE OFF !
