Chain Bridge Honey Farm Description
The Chain Bridge Honey Farm is a flourishing family business, started by beekeeping advisor William Selby Robson in 1948.
In 1962, his son, also William but known as Willie, took up beekeeping with the aim of expanding his father’s enterprise, not only by increasing the number of hives, but also the diversity of products.
Bees were purchased from retiring beekeepers while Smith hives were made from local timber (predominantly Thuja, which is light and resists decay). In those days, large quantities of comb honey were produced as well as liquid honey mainly from wild white clover.
In 1971 William Robson Snr retired and helped Willie establish a viable honey farm. His knowledge and experience was crucial at this time. Mr Robson Snr continued to work with bees until he was 82 years old.
In 1973 Daphne Robson joined the business, preparing honey for sale and delivering it to the shops. The business grew year by year and in 1982 a new honey house was built. Much of the machinery installed came from ship-breakers and is still in use today. The honey house was gradually extended to include workshops and, in 1991, a very comprehensive visitor centre.

It was around this time that many new products were introduced using the vast amounts of beeswax produced. Hive numbers rose gradually as the seasons allowed from 500 to nearly 2, 000 at present (with 2, 500 the future target). These are located within a 40-mile radius of Berwick-upon-Tweed.
2007 should see the business move into a new, third honey house, with hopes to increase the average production of honey to above 80 tonnes.
Most people who telephone the honey farm will speak to Daphne, who is now responsible for organising honey deliveries to about 350 shops.
The enterprise at Chain Bridge Honey Farm is ‘vertically integrated’, in so far as all relevant jobs are carried out by the existing staff and this includes constructing the buildings, making the beehives (plus all the relevant parts), modifying and installing machinery, beekeeping and preparation of honey and by-products, wholesaling the products to retailers and retailing the product at Chain Bridge Honey Farm and online. The farm currently employs 15 people including Willie and Daphne and their three children, Stephen, Heather and Frances.

Well worth a visit! Apart from all the interesting info about bees and honey, the murals had us enthralled! Then continued along to the vintage vehicles and museum. Fantastic! Highly recommended.

Staff really friendly. The garden is beautiful. The bus is fantastic, very reasonable and great quality products. I had a scone which was delicious. Well worth a visit. You can even sit upstairs on the bus 5 x *

Perfect spot for grovelling in old vehicles, seeing brilliant murals and of course the honey.
Lovely couple of hours spent here, really well set up for young children. Loved the bus cafe and being able to see the working elements of the farm. Worth the short stroll across the border into Scotland too. Just wish we'd bought more honey! �

Fabulous place to learn all about honey ! we loved watching the worker bees through the glass inside the visitor centre and the museum was excellent. We also enjoyed a walk over the chain bridge into the Scottish borders. Can't wait to visit again .
Consistently excellent food & beverages, plus toys for the little ones & vintage vehicles for all. All in all, a lovely spot with great walks in all directions 😊
Being interested in bees and honey production, this was an unusual place that ticked a lot of boxes. The informative visitor centre had a glass sided hive which was fascinating and plenty of delicious honey to taste and buy (at reasonable prices). The honey ice cream was lovely and though we didn't go to the cafe, the idea of a double decker bus as the cafe was wonderful. Free entry and parking plus a walk to Scotland across the nearby Union bridge makes a great day out.
Another great visit to The Honey Farm. Fantastic assortment of rustic freshly made sandwiches, gorgeous home made cakes and good variety of hot/cold drinks. Very friendly staff and a great experience on the Double Decker cafe bus. Outdoor old vehicles and vintage museum plus indoor bee display which is all free. A small enclosed play area for children too. Well worth a visit.
An excellent experience and truly worth while if you are in the area with wonderful tea and cake
After staying on our Easter break at the caravan with awfull weather we ventured out and care across this place ... it’s lovely so friendly a lovely tea shop on a bus with fabulous cakes and a little shop to purchase little gifts ... very interesting display and space to run around a little slide for kids and they were happy as Larry .... what made this was the friendless and the time the staff took to speak to you and make sure everything was perfect .... ands it’s FREE.....
hope the lady in the shop with broken arm is on the mend she even let Hannah put her purchase through the till

Absolutely beautiful honey! Visitor centre is full of information about honey bees, loads of pictures, displays and info to soak up. Nice wee play area for little kids and the bus cafe and other vehicles are a nice wee touch. Just along the road from the chain bridge so can be visited together. Again, amazing honey!
