Before coming to Dimensions, Azrab was bullied at home by a family member, and then walked out on by an agency staff member from his previous support provider.
He was left alone for 7 hours with a dangerously full colostomy bag and no means of communicating his distress, this event shaped many of his current anxieties and support priorities.
But that hasn't stopped him and, as you will read from our interview with him, he's a force to be reckoned with...
... https://www.dimensions-uk.org/…/campaig ner-azrabs-inspirin…/
Azrab sits in his preferred chair, chatting enthusiastically to me alongside twinkly-eyed support worker, Wensley.
Blind, with a learning disability, diabetes, a colostomy bag and considerable anxieties, you might be forgiven for thinking good support for Azrab would be managing the rough hand he’s been dealt. Not a bit of it.
He says, "just now I’m campaigning for Sheffield’s trams to wait for wheelchairs to be secured before moving off.
"It’s really frightening when they set off, sometimes even before the doors have closed properly behind my chair."
Azrab is also compiling a listing of disability friendly cafes and other venues in Sheffield..."So many think they’re accessible but they’re really not. Tables are too high or there’s no wheelchair-accessible route to the toilets"
"‘I’m going to put myself forward for the Dimensions ‘Involvement Directory'. And next month I’m hoping to meet big boss Steve Scown at the North Listening Forum for people Dimensions supports.
"I’m happy for myself but I want the chance to change stuff for others."

We're so proud to share our latest autism friendly coverage with you.
A while back we were approached by CBS news, who wanted to record a piece about our autism friendly projects.
We introduced them to our Belong By GAME partners whose colleagues in Bristol kindly volunteered to host the filming.
... If you watch the video, you will also see our own Michelle (Involvement and Engagement Coordinator and an Autism Ambassador) with her wonderful family.
Together with her daughter Lauren, Michelle helps shape our autism friendly work with her professional experience and her personal experience as mum to three children on the spectrum.
It recently aired up to 3 times throughout the day and on over 150 stations across the USA.
It's an honour to share our work so widely and we hope we can inspire the world to be more inclusive.

We recently asked people we support, their families, tenants, our colleagues and commissioners for their views on Dimensions and how we work with them.
The results of this survey are available to read in our Listening and Learning report, and they will be integral in shaping how we develop and improve what we do and how we continue to support people.
We're proud of the results, and thank everyone for being honest in their feedback. We'd like to share some of the key figures w...ith you:
- 97% of the people we support are happy with their support. - 98% of people we support get the support they need to do the things important to them, while 71% choose who supports them. - 90% of families told us their concerns were acted on promptly. - 82% think we are providing a good or excellent service to their relative. - 89% of our tenants are happy with their housing service, and 73% were happy with repairs and maintenance. - 92% of colleagues feel they make a difference through the work they do. - 85% say people here are treated equally irrespective of their diverse characteristics.
We are very happy to know we are supporting people to be happy, safe and well.
We know there is always room for improvement and we hope these results will motivate and inspire our wonderful colleagues who make a difference every single day.

Dimensions responds to appointment of Matt Hancock as Health and Social Care Secretary
“With the sudden departure of Jeremy Hunt as Health and Social Care Secretary, there’s no doubt that Matt Hancock is inheriting a sector in crisis.” Alicia Wood, Head of Public Affairs at Dimensions, responds.
“This announcement has further rocked the boat after a turbulent few months in health and social care.
... “But with his economics background and time spent in the Public Accounts Committee, I hope that Hancock is more willing to find economic solutions to the social care – and thus wider health – sector than his predecessor.

"For far too long people have been deprived of their liberty in care and support settings with little recourse to justice.
“The rights of people with learning disabilities and autism are ignored and devalued in many areas, so this announcement is a welcome step to ensure that people’s rights can be upheld when it comes to some of the most fundamental, our right to freedom and safety...”
Dimensions welcomes the introduction of a new law to protect people, who do not have menta...l capacity, to make decisions about their care and who are deprived of their liberty.
Since the Law Commission opened its consultation on Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards in 2015, Dimensions has stressed the need for the system to be simpler; accessible to people, families, providers and local authorities; and less burdensome across different care and support settings.
The proposed legislation will reduce the backlog in applications that local authorities are currently facing and ensure that people with learning disabilities and autism who are deprived of their liberty will have adequate protection.
The Joint Committee on Human Rights recent report – The Right to Freedom and Safety – recommended that adequate funding be made available for independent advocates, who are a crucial part of implementing safeguards.
Dimensions stressed the importance of this in our evidence to both the Law Commission and the Right to Freedom and Safety inquiry, and we hope to see this implemented as government progresses the new bill.

We recently received a message and we would like to share it with you. Our #ImWithSam campaign wants to see difference celebrated more though toys and literature, so we were thrilled to hear this story about a young man named Will Hawkes.
"At the age of 16 Will illustrated and published his first in a series of books aimed at spreading awareness of autism.
"He worked with Liverpool children's author Jude Lennon to write the book 'Hal and the Street' which has become a number... one Amazon Bestseller and has already received lots of attention in the media and in the way of reviews.
"The book is based in the 1970s and features a character called Hal who has autism. The book highlights the every day challenges many people with autism face and the reader is asked to make decisions on what Hal should do next.
"Will wanted to write the book because when he was younger he found reading hard as he couldn't relate to any of the characters in books. He says they weren't like him."
Take a look at this video about his book and how he's helping children with autism #ImWithSam http://ow.ly/7BWZ30kIOX3

As a devout Christian, Brian dreamed that one day, he would go to Rome. After just a few years of being supported by Dimensions, and a lot of hard work by his staff, that particular dream came true.
Brian originally thought up the idea whilst on a visit to the library with staff. As he carefully studied the geography section, he came across a book about Rome. He announced there and then that he would love to go one day and meet the Pope. Though the real Pope was busy during B...rian’s visit – he did get to meet a wax lookalike, which was close enough for him.
Brian and his support worker Lauren Rodgers visited Pope Francis’ home and had a guided tour of The Vatican, as well as seeing other popular tourist sites such as the Trevi fountain, museums and religious sites.
Lauren said: “The change I have seen in Brian since he started travelling is amazing. Seeing him experiencing crowds made me extremely proud.
The trip to Rome has given him the confidence to go on to visit Buckingham Palace, the Houses of Parliament and the London Eye.”
Brian said: “My trip to Rome was absolutely fantastic. I got to see lots of history and they had lots of nice plants. It was very hot.”

By Martin Boniface Last month, my son, Harry was excited to go to the theatre. Harry has severe learning disabilities, epilepsy and no speech, Harry loves animals and when his Dimensions support worker took him to see Into the Woods, a musical fairy tale, he was really enjoying the matinee performance. All the more because I was in the cast.
Harry expressed his enjoyment by making lots of sounds. When a cow appeared on stage, he would recognise it and would moo. When a wolf a...ppeared, he would howl. He loved it.
Someone in front kept turning round and saying shush. Eventually the lady told Harry’s support worker that they should leave as “he was distracting and disrespecting the performers on stage”. The support worker did her best to explain the situation but the lady turned her back on them and eventually they felt obliged to leave.
Harry was really sad at the time and whilst I was incandescent with rage, both I and Harry’s support team will do our best to help put the incident behind us. Based on this experience, it is very easy to see why so many people with learning disabilities just want to stay indoors and hide.
There have been many similar incidents reported recently. A lady with Asperger’s Syndrome was forcibly ejected from a film for laughing too loudly. Another lady was asked to leave a pub after staff mistook her disability for being drunk.
You can argue that this is a good thing. Disabled people are increasingly going out in public, are less shuttered away in institutions out of the public eye. But of course, as this happens, as non-disabled people encounter those with disabilities more and more, there will be conflict. Anxiety on all sides will rise. We need to shine a light on this. We need to learn from those moments of conflict and find ways to ensure that everyone in society can rub along together ok, with minimal friction.
At the extreme end, this conflict amounts to hate crime and lobbies such as Dimensions’ #ImWithSam campaign are working to tackle this through making changes in schools, in the police and judicial systems, and with the public.
But what about the other end of the spectrum? How can we encourage people to question their own tolerances? How can we get people to think ‘might this person have a disability’ instead of ‘isn’t this person ill-behaved’? What can support teams do to help things along, and how should they react when things go wrong?
Working with Martin, Dimensions has put together a ‘top 10 (actually 11!) tips’ for avoiding, and dealing with, difficult moments in public. We would welcome your thoughts:

When Dimensions key worker Juliette Goddard was paired with talented artist Joe Dolan, she had a feeling it would be a masterpiece.
In addition to supporting Joe with various aspects of daily living, Joe and Juliette are together starting to make waves in the art world. “I’m a former art teacher with two degrees in fine art,” explains Juliette. “So it’s enormously rewarding to use my skills to help someone else. We are very well-matched!”
Over the last year, the duo have trav...elled from Crawley in West Sussex to exhibitions around London. As a result the 29-year-old has explored the works of artists like Picasso, Jean-Michel Basquiat and David Hockney.
This bond with fellow artists is captured in Joe’s moving blog posts, where he writes: "Art, for me, is a therapy and insight to everything. Where I do not have freedom from my disorder. I find relief and purpose in my own ideas – which are made explainable in form, texture and colour. Through my artistic imagination, I have managed to express my truth to make people recognise me in ways I feel I should be."
In November 2017, Joe discussed his technique in a presentation for Share Art, which is hosted by charity Outside In. The event enables underrepresented artists to showcase their work. Following this, he presented his work at the Royal Academy of Art in a public lecture on June 1.

This is Claire. Claire is a huge fan of Peter Andre and she has been lucky enough to meet him at an intimate chat show at Crawley’s The Hawth Theatre.
Claire used to visit Peter Andre’s coffee shop in East Grinstead every week. It was her routine to go as part of her 1:1 support every Tuesday, so she was very disappointed when it closed down.
Until recently, she hadn’t had the opportunity to see her hero since. This was a negative experience for Claire.
... It was no surprise that Claire was thrilled when Fiona King, one of Dimensions’ support workers, recently supported her to attend ‘An Evening with Peter Andre’, which included a meet and greet.
Support Worker Fiona King said: “I think the experience was great for Claire. Peter Andre really is a talking point for her and a person she feels is part of her life.
“It was a real shame when his coffee shop closed down as Claire missed the regular activity and structure. But as soon as the tickets were booked, it gave her something really positive to look forward to.
“We will definitely be on the lookout for more public appearances or concerts for Claire to meet Peter Andre again.” https://www.dimensions-uk.org/…/peter-a ndre-meets-mysterio…/

Karen used to be cared for lovingly by her family until a crisis led to her entering an assessment and treatment unit (ATU). She is deaf and has a learning disability so she was left feeling isolated.
In the ATU she was subjected to seclusion, medication and restraint. She had no interpreter and no way of communicating her wants or needs.
Her brother remembers back to how the family felt at the time – that it was a necessary step because of her emotional state, “she needed th...at control.”
But without being able to see what was possible - with structured support from a professional team - her family didn’t know any different.
“It became a downward spiral in terms of her aggressions.”- Karen’s brother
Karen was referred to Dimensions by her local Transforming Care team. Working closely with people around her, we were able to move her into supported living with staff trained specially to meet her needs.
“I moved from the hospital to Smug. I’m now very happy here with my flat and also with the staff [Karen signs]”.
Now Karen is happy, more independent and has even inspired her brother, Michael, to join Dimensions as a Support Worker.
Watch Karen’s story and hear what steps her team took to transform her life.

After much preparation we can now share our new campaign with you - #MyGPandMe.
https://www.dimensions-uk.org/…/make-gp s-accessible-mygpan…/
We found that one third of people with learning disabilities or autism feel less likely to be listened to by their GP and 98% of GPs would like a training session led by experts by experience. ... So we're making it happen. Through #MyGPandMe we are:
+ providing training led by people with learning disabilities or autism to all GP surgery staff + making this training free for the first 50 practices to sign up + campaigning to make training on providing care for people with learning disabilities or autism compulsory for all student doctors + developing and sharing resources, guides and tools with surgery staff, patients, support teams and families.
Why is this so important? Research shows that people with learning disabilities are 5 times more likely to end up in hospital for preventable issues and that life expectancy is shockingly low compared to the general population.
We are tackling this and you can help too.
👍 If you ask your GP surgery to take our training they might be one of the first 50 and receive it for free, as well as a free copy of Books Beyond Words: I'm Going To The Doctor. You can download a free flyer from our website. 👍If you ask your MP for training on meeting the health needs of people with learning disabilities or autism compulsory we will start to see a movement nationwide. You can find out how on our website. 👍If you share our report, resources and guides you will help more GPs, people with learning disabilities or autism and their support teams understand more about their rights. You can find a wealth of resources on our website.

The autism friendly screenings are brilliant! They allow families to access an acitivity they might have not been able to access. My little one went to a number of normal screenings, but it was just too much for her, now she loves the cinema.

Although I think it would be amazing to see extra screenings through school holidays... More so the longer holidays as so many films come out, not all of them end up in the autism friendly screenings.

I've worked for Dimensions since October 2009. They are as a company so hard working, inspiration and devoted to every service user i have personally ever worked with. Together with their families, friends and all professional services they use. Their pathway and life choices are met. As an employee they have helped myself and my family through some tough times too. Great company to work for needs more recognisation for dedicated staff on all levels.

User

I'm really proud to be a part of Dimensions. I love working for an organisation who don't just "talk the talk" but they too walk the walk when it comes to putting the needs of the people we support first and foremost in everything that they do.

User

I have worked for Dimensions UK for 15 year's and have always praised them, I am very shocked when I hear bad stories about support staff and management, I work with a great team and we always listen to the people we support and definitely try and make a difference in life's if we can, I do agree that it does get harder due to the cuts and the low wages and to meet dead lines with paper work, but the people we support always come first it is all about making a difference and making life better, I would recommend Dimensions.

User

I have just left Dimensions after 20 years service. Excellent company to work for and very Person centred around the people we all support. Thank you to the Worcester Team for making me part of a lovely family. Highly recommend this company. I will miss them all.

Hi dimnastics I am be happy I like the support staff and keyworks well I am like my flat is nice trying and I do horrow about my home

Brilliant. Wonderful. Events for the whole family. To be able to enjoy no matter what Ur child/adult/friend needs are. This is open to all x

It's very rare we as a family can enjoy a trip to the movies, due to the complex needs off 4 out off 7 off our family members.

A time to relax in the knowledge that those people in the theatre, go threw the same as you. Been judge. Frowned upon. Told to leave cos those in Ur party are a disruption.

This is the one place you can feel safe in the knowledge non off that will happen.

Thank you to all cinemas taking part in this scheme. Xx it means so much to families like mine xxxxxx

Although I do not have autism I went to an autism friendly screening of The Good Dinosuar because I have hypervigilance, anxiety and hallucinations and going to the cinema, sitting in the dark with darkeness around me is stressful. I have never felt so relaxed in a cinema! The film started straight away so I was not sitting anxious for an hour. The lights were on so I could keep an eye on hallucinations, the sound was not booming and I could be myself without anyone staring, though I still jumped at noises it was not as bad as it would have been if it was loud. I forgot to take my anxiety medication and I was still relaxed regardless! Thank you Dimensions for providing such a brilliant service and will be going to another screening very soon. The cinema is now accesible :)

Started working for Dimensions as a six month stop gap between jobs, progressed through different departments and now a Locality manager and stayed for nearly 9years, good company to work for, there is frustrations as there is in any company but solutions can be found when the teams & departments work together, I would recommend this company.

User

Dimensions a good company to work for but it totally depends on the team your working for. I worked at 1 service where the morale was good and at other services the morale was shocking. There was one member of staff who is way too close to management who is always stirring the pots and people are losing there jobs or leaving because of false accusations. An old colleague of mine was under investigation and one of my friends who works at the same service cannot understand why this has happened because she is very good at her job.

User

awful company which is corrupt and crook

User

Wouldn't advise this company to any one , the way they handle things are discusting , had the end of my phrobation meeting today and was finished on false allogations after it been extended a hole 10 months , that wasn't looked into appropriately and didn't take my say into consideration at all . even though I had filled all the correct paper work out .

User

Worst company you could ever work for!The management do not care for the staff or people they support.

You'll be stuck on shift for days on end with no support!

Use agency staff to cover absolutely everything unlike partners in support!

If you're keen on becoming a support worker! I'm sure anybody with any sense would recommend you apply for partners in support, before ever working for this bunch of muppets!

It's not even worth the one star!!!

User

Think before you take a post with this company. Dimensions will advertise they are a good company to work for, and you will receive full support- this is far from the truth. I have very recently left his shambles of a company as I recognised that infact no support was offered, all Management are up there own back sides and will take praise for All your own hard work. Having worked in care for 16 years this is by far the worse company I have ever worked for and their are many in Business.

Unrealistic targets, not willing to listen, wasting public money on things that don't work. It got to a point where people were leaving bad reviews the Head of Resourcing asked staff to put good reviews even though they are not happy.

The support workers do a good job which is very testing yet this is jot recognised by management. They are well over paid and simply no one ever seed them apart from when they outbuildings down as you do not meet there rediculous standards.

I would strongly advise anyone wanting to work for this company to think and avoid. Their are better companies to work for who do look after staff.

AVOID AT ALL COSTS

User

I live in the leicester area, and the support that is provide by dimensions is appalling, considering there meant to support people with autism there is no consistency in what they offer, the just don't care. They don't listen to what service users have to say and they think they know best when really they know nothing about me. The staff are more interested in playing with mobile phones during shifts and when you ask for help when you genuinely need it they turn you down even though you've asked whether or not they are busy. They are lazy and never want to help anyone. I am really not happy where I live Infact it's horrible and I hate living here. I don't feel that I can live happily at all. I would never recommend them to anyone.

User

I left after years, all the good staff are gone. It's become an oddly cold corporate place, I don't think being person centred really works with that at all.

Corporate slogans is about all you hear.

Staff retention is shocking and in my region all mainly staffed by agency workers it seemed. Shame really, it was great years ago.

Maybe it's still good in places but luck of the draw probably.

Brilliant.

West london dimensions is simply the best they are kindly giving me work experience and loving every minute of it as it is so rewarding to be able to lend a hand to people who are less able thank you dimensions for giving me this opportunity to be part of the team I hope this can lead to more opportunities maybe even paid employment thank you again

This sounds like fun i been trying to ring the Oxford one this morning so i can join up is this for all ages because i have disabilities to and i want to join up and the Oxford one is the nearest one for me.

User

I've worked for Dimensions since October 2009. They are as a company so hard working, inspiration and devoted to every service user i have personally ever worked with. Together with their families, friends and all professional services they use. Their pathway and life choices are met. As an employee they have helped myself and my family through some tough times too. Great company to work for needs more recognisation for dedicated staff on all levels.
