Esthwaite Water Trout Fishery

The Trout are coming out thick and fast! The Smart family had a great guided afternoon yesterday landing 11 fish. Jane, Tony, Maisie and Seth had a wonderful time, it was their first ever fishing trip and boy did they get some great action. Happy Easter to the Smart family, lovely people!

It is with great sadness that I have to tell you of the passing of our dear friend John Brady. John and his wife Elaine came to us during this year's pike season and were very open about his terminal illness but his optimism never failed to impress. We were humbled that John chose to spend many of his last days with us during which time we got to know each other and shared many laughs, not least the time he got slapped by a mid double. John you will be dearly missed, tight lines and Elaine please don't be a stranger. Our condolences to you and the family. Jim, Jill, Dave, Alfie and Bracken. X

Another great afternoon's guiding spent with Warwickshire based Sam Lester and Theo Davis. The youngsters came on their first ever Trout fishing trip and sport was once again electric with at least 7 fish to the boat and countless others lost! After an absence of 5 years, the Chaplow's cup was reinstated in Esthwaite's events calendar yesterday! The inter tarmacing company any method Trout competition was a resounding success with 18 anglers landing 37 Trout in this great catch and release match. The total length of the 37 fish that were measured came to 1593cm and countless fish were also lost. The winner of the competition was Phil Hawkins with 10 Trout for a total length of 431cm. In second place was Martin Smit...h with 5 fish for 208cm and in third place was Derek Hawkins with 4 fish for 172cm. Winning tactics on the day was spinning , however runner up Martin Smith took all his fish on fly. What a great bunch of lads. Good to have you all back and we look forward to hosting next years event, which i am sure after this performance, will be bigger and better than ever before. Watch this space!

After yesterday's stocking of a further 1000lb, the jetty and pontoon fishing is "on fire" once again. The Rhatigan family, Mark Karen, Amy and Ryan had a number of fish in quick succession. Well done boys and girls for their success on their first ever fishing session! The boats are reporting loads of fish, with all methods producing the goods. Best areas at present include the ticket office frontage and the car park area of the lake, down to Stockie bay. And another superb mornings guiding for the Pitt family, with Josh, Oscar and Arthur from London! The first timers managed a few nice Trout even though the fish were off the bite today. We hooked up and lost at least another 25! Anyway another family well and truly hooked, they even bought some beginner kits on return to the ticket office......Tightlines for future and hope to see you guys back at Esthwaite on your next visit to the Lakes? Even the latest stocking of another 1000lb that went in at lunchtime did not bite straight away after last nights cold temperatures.........Sure they will be back on form tomorrow though!

Another action packed guided fishing trip this morning for the Farmer family. Caroline, Dan, Josie and Kate had a great time as the fishing was very consistent once again. Another 4 new recruits to the angling world, courtesy of "The Lakeland Legend!"

It just goes on and on!........Another great days fishing here today at Esthwaite. The serious boat anglers are reporting plenty on fly and spinning tactics. One boat yesterday reported 15 Trout and the jetty and pontoon Easter family action is red hot, with all the kids catching fish. If you love your Trout fishing then what are you waiting for,? More jetty action from yesterday, with Mike, Niki, Lavren and Olivia who had 7 fish between them and Jim got in on the action in his civilian gear with a few nice ones too! The fishing is great again today, despite the bright sunshine.......One boat has reported 10 fish already!

The second stocking of the season took place this morning and another 1000lb of top quality triploid Brown Trout were introduced to the lake. There were some crackers in amongst this lot in excess of 3lb. That should juice things up this weekend. My little friend Roman Thompson came out with me yesterday afternoon for another guided fishing trip to christen his new rod and he achieved that in fine style with 6 Trout and 2 Pike. The Trout fishing is spectacular at the moment and a big thank you goes out to Phil Mart and Dunsop Bridge Trout Farm for supplying us with such good quality fish, they really are top notch and the fighting qualities are the best i have ever seen for Trout of that size...........When they first hit the lure, you think you have hooked a double figure Pike on steroids. Really strong fish.!!! Anyway another great guided trip and you got to love Roman, his enthusiasm for fishing is infectious. A great angler in the making, hope to see you again soon!

Karen Hardingham and family turned up yesterday for their annual fishing trip. This is the third year in a row we have entertained this family during the Easter Holidays and as usual young Lily had the best of the action. You might remember Lily catching a 10 lb pike from this very spot a couple of years ago. If any one would like to turn fishing into catching just watch Lily, she never stops casting! Season Ticket holders Steve and Andy spent the last day of the season trout fishing landing 8 2-3 pound fish. They also had a great season with 42 pike, 24 doubles and 2 twenties between them. Great fishing lads, its been a pleasure and we will see you at the Grand Slam. Cheers Jim

As you all will know our first stocking of the season took place yesterday and today we had our first guided Trout trip with mum and son Louise and Roman Thompson. Grandad Ian came with us as well. After half an hour teaching them the basics of casting, we were ready to go for real. As expected with new stockies they were in a ravenous mood and despite the first timers on the boat they got into the swing of things landing 8 nice Trout between 2 and 3 pounds. All fish fell to the Savage Gear Cannibal Shads and young 7 year old Roman bought his own rod and reel set up after the session...........No more X Box for him! Great time and lovely people.........Hope to see you all back at Esthwaite again soon!

Dave Green broke his blanking streak yesterday with this little rooter, about time mate. Season ticket holder Mark Hankin got his tactics right with 7 fish all caught in 4 to 7 feet of water on static dead baits, great fishing. Sorry I couldn't post the montage of pictures Mark, it was too big! Another couple had 3 fish and Tom Robertson from Manchester had a 40 pound bag of Bream. With the first 1000 pounds of trout going in today and the Ospreys due back next week we are all excited for the change in season and the great diversity of fishing it will bring. Cheers Jim

Wow.....Always wanted to fish Esthwaite but living 2 and half hours away never have the chance, popped in while passing by on a family break to the cafe following a walk and Jill made us and our children more than welcome. The kids loved feeding the ducks at the cafe. Can’t wait to return with the rods!!!

Where do i start.....what an amazing weekend of fishing. This was my first time fishing in the lake district and i cant believe i have never been there before. Jim and Gill (the owners) are a credit to the cumbrian community there hospitality was the best out there. We were very fortunate to book in to there bed and breakfast at the last minute which was delieverd to us on the lake,fresh warm sandiwhiches and a hot flask. All ready cant wait for next pike season ti begin. Highly highly recommended

We have just got back from a days guided fishing with Dave the local legend, who knows the lake so well we had some nice fish out, a great day and great breakfast 10 out of 10 ���

We had a fantastic day with our two children aged 6 and 4 on a guided boat. My husband loves fishing but i wasnt sure i would enjoy it. How wrong could i be! We caught loads of fish and we all loved it! Dave was amazing with the children and helped us all loads. He is now my little boys hero! Can't wait to plan a return trip.

The boys had a fab day fishing on Saturday, thank you so much. They have talked about little else since!

Cafe is fab, food and drinks were lovely. We felt super welcome both there and at the fishery.

Will certainly be back next time we're in the Lakes.

Spent a great day guided fishing out on the boat with the 'Lakeland Legend' (AKA Dave), despite the miserable conditions we still managed to bag a grand slam (trout/perch/pike) and thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. All the staff are very welcoming and helpful. We'll definately be back for more fishing action very soon!

Spent 4 days fishing here. My friend and I were camped up on the bay across from the cafe. Fishing was steady even given the severe cold. We managed 4 doubles and a 7lber. We cannot express enough our thanks and appreciation to jim and Jill who own and run the place. 2 nicer people you couldn’t meet and they went totally above and beyond to accommodate us at every turn. Even Alfie the dog was friendly. Can’t recommend the place enough. Great sport and even better people. We will be back

My favorite fishing location second to none, due to it's stunning location and great mixture of fish. We normally arrive very early and look forward to an excellent breakfast and often lunch in their cafe. Friendly staff, it’s always a pleasure!

Let down by how many swims there were. We were told that you need to buy bait at the fishery,upon arrival we were told we could use other baits which we never had.

I asked twice if we could bivvy up and were told yes,again upon arrival we were told no night fishing. Feel a little let down but on the upside,i had one fish.

Just spent 3 days fishing here and it's a well organised and beautiful place to fish. Big thanks to Jim for his help with trying to put us on to the big fish and also to Jill for her hospitality and fantastic breakfasts. Highly recommend this place and will definitely be back in the new piking season

Just had a couple of days guided Pike fishing on the lake. Dave the guide was brilliant, explained everything and why we we dropped anchor where we did. Tackle and bait was spot on. Also had the pleasure of staying in the lakes B&B with the owners Jim and Jill. Top notch accom and food. Nothing was too much trouble. The icing on the cake was seeing hundreds of huge browns to 13lb being released into the lake for the anglers enjoyment. Esthwaite in now the alround real deal for me now, fishing, accom, food ... you go as an angler and come back with new friends

I had two days guided fishing here the guide Dave Coleman was absolutely mustard it was cold and hard on Tuesday with a jack of 5lb but Wednesday surpassed any other guided trip I have been on four doubles two 19lb and 20lb fish . The B@B was great Jim and Jill catered for my every whim ,beautiful place beautiful people and the dogs Archie Bracken and Maisie loved it I'll be back

Organises plenty of good photos of the catch too. My kids caught ten perch each, so well pleased. We may well go back in the autumn for some trout !

I had a great day, and not just cos I broke my pb twice! Having a guide is a great treat, but in my opinion, well worth it. I can see the new owners still have lots to do, but I saw passion and determination. I am sure given a short amount of time, this fishery will be top class. Dave my guide was very knowledgeable and he made me feel like I had a perfect day, Oh! I broke my pb twice and finally caught a twenty, two actually. It was a perfect day!!!

I booked the bed and breakfast for my husband and his 2 mates for an over night stay. they were going course fishing. Hubby returned tonight and said do a review ( as he is not technical with facebook) this is his words.

Great day had by all form the lovely breakfast to the guided perch fishing. Dave our guide put us on the fish immediately and offered plenty of tips when on occasion the fishing slowed. Will definitely be paying everyone at estwaithe a visit in the near future - first class

Dave gave my 13-year-old son a great day's introduction to fishing - caught so many perch we lost count. Fabulous setting, professional and friendly tuition and a great cafe to warm up with a hot chocolate at the end of the session - we'll be back!

traveled to esthwaite at the week end 23/2/18 conditions were very difficult ice on the lake very cold and windy still managed to catch I went out with Dave the guide had a good crack sharing some stories and of course he helped a lot telling me about the lake its a beautiful place to spend the day and will deffo be going back
