In World War II, North Hill was closed to civilians and brought under military control. It became one of country's five new tank training ranges for British, American and Canadian troops. Tucked down the coastal slopes lay a top secret Radar Station, one of 244 across the country and part of a coastal defensive chain to identify shipping and low flying aircraft. The stations were 'manned' 24 hours a day and operators at Radar Stations were often women from the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF).
Find out more about this incredible time at our 'North Hill on the Radar' event this Saturday 8th September (10am - 3:30pm).

Exmoor National Park is famous for its beautiful heather moors, but did you know it's trees are also special? Among the Douglas Firs growing in Nutcombe Bottom near Dunster there are some absolute whoppers, including England's tallest tree standing at over 60m! Exmoor also has some of the rarest, with three species of whitebeam found nowhere else in the world, along with some of the most ancient veteran trees in the country.

We've noticed these strange shapes popping up all over the National Park. Are they the result of alien visitors? 👾 The mark of the Exmoor Beast perhaps?! 🐾 Whatever they are, using nearby rocks to keep hot objects off the grass really helps keep these beautiful places looking their best! 😉🙏

The heather is looking spectacular at the moment! Globally heather moorland is extremely rare and in Exmoor National Park we're working hard to conserve this protected habitat.

simply stunning we arrived just outside simonsbath at around 8 am and walked till about 1pm ... trundled down into doone valley and found the natural spring with the clearest water ive ever tasted ...... then we found a lovely pub with an open fire to warm up in ..... very glad i traded city living for country ....

User

We walked up Dunkery hill and had epic views back to Yes Tor In Dartmoor were we had been the day befor. Trails are in good condition and well established so most people can get there for a look.

User

We love Exmoor. We visit from Suffolk as often as time allows - considering the distance! Winter is a favourite time as the views are endless when the weather is kind and it's full of atmosphere when the weather is harsh. Slightly disappointing that all but a few shops and eateries seem to be closed most days between Xmas and New Year, including the information centres - despite hundreds of visitors.

User

We have been visiting since the 1970s our most recent visit was to celebrate my husbands 70th birthday at the White Horse Inn at Exford,a favourite stay on Exmoor. All the family together for a while. The countryside and coast never fails to uplift us all young and old

User

Views are breath taking, whilst the environment is breath giving, air so clean and crisp. Saw lots of locals, long horns, sheep and prancing ponies, all against a sea of purple heather. Fantastic.

User

Thoroughly enjoy our day exploring Exmoor and searching for the ponies. The area is so prettt with all the pink heather and the ponies were plentiful. They were an amazing sight. Very memorable.

User

The best place on earth so much to do never get fed up of this place magical is the only way to describe it

User

Really lovely staff could not be any better really friendly and helpful.

User

Thanks for having us.x

User

Just a quick one to thank you for another wonderful Family camp out! Pat and Adam were, as always, fantastic hosts. I would also like to take this opportunity to wish Adam every success with his new post in the New Forrest. He has been an absolute credit to himself and to the park and he will be missed by us all and I'm sure by you guys too. Its a shame to see him go but I have absolutely no doubt he will be a huge asset to the New Forrest Ranger Service. Best of luck Adam! We will see you, Pat, at Heddons in September. Thanks again all.

User

I think everyone should have a place "in the middle of nowhere" where he/she can find a perfect circumstances to talk with himself. Witnesses should be only Exmoor ponies, wind and rain (from time to time and not so strong). I am sure that Exmoor this is exactly such a place. Beeing there you can't stop watch the water, listen to the wind. You can also listen to yourself. Sorry if you will asses this as a stupid. Your choice not to see what I saw. And I will come back to Exmoor many times. And I will show it to all my friends coming from Poland to see World Wonders :)

User

Exmoor is a beautiful part of the UK, I love it! :o)

However this review is for the new (ish) ENPA visitor centre and café building down in Lynmouth. We visited on the last day of our recent holiday, not having been since the refurbishment of the building a few years ago. We were very impressed with the building refurb and the visitor centre. My husband is a wheelchair user so we were particularly grateful there was a lift to access all floors - something often overlooked in public buildings. The café was a lovely bright, clean space with beautiful views of the sea, the staff were lovely and friendly, and the food was very good quality :o)

Many thanks :o)

Came down for the red bull steeplechase and loved every minute!

Loved running exmoor and I loved lynmouth!

Would love to see more interaction between the local business and the event itself because this could be a great annual even provided it doesn't interrupt local business.

User

Beautiful part of the country. Stayed camping in Minehead at the top of the hill looking down on the bay at the landscape. Also went to the holincote estate nearby and trail walking into Porlock Bay. Some fantastic trekking and walking areas and several seaside towns to visit also in Minehead Lynmouth and a few others. Definitely worth a visit.

User

Always a pleasure to be in Exmoor ... stunning area no matter what time of the year.

For me even better as i get paid to be working there often!

Just forget a map and drive, take turnings and discover

We went to our favourite place which is "Robbers Bridge" and have never seen it looking some magical...It's a special place for me and my girlfriend!! Looking forward to getting out again, cant wait for our next Exmoor adventure...Cant come soon enough!!!

User

A truly wild and remote area of outstanding natural beauty. The wind howled, the clouds engulfed us yet the only sounds were those of the sheep and birds inhabiting the landscape. I couldn't see the view from the top but I'm sure I'll return when the weather is kinder.

User

We went on a stargazing trip to Exmoor and enjoyed the whole experince. During day time witnessed stunning and breathtaking views of Exmoor National park. Walk in woods and around the lake is really an experience in itself ! A must go place for families !

User

It is an amazing place to visit if you like to see nature in the raw and the wide unspoilt landscapes of moorland and its hills and river valleys. But do not be fooled, if you are novice start simple and stick to popular easy routes. Anything else plan for the worst, have the right clothing, know your route and enjoy.
