Root and Branch:
The creative imagery of the tree is rooted in the ancient oak forests of Britain, growing through the ages to branch into the present. From ancient Druidic and Celtic art to present-day fractal pop imagery, the concept of the tree rooting, growing and branching has inspired artists, designers and craftspeople for thousands of years.
Using two printmaking techniques, with additional chine collé and watercolour, and exploring the Phytopia exhibition, you will work with artist/printmaker Rose Davies to produce a small edition of drypoint etchings and at least one monotype inspired by the history and influence of trees in our culture.

Well worth a visit fab place then a nice cup of coffee

User

Visited today. Really enjoyed it with my preschooler. She loved the monkeys and the colouring. The coffee was great too.

User

Took part in a family workshop today. Highly recommend. Accommodated for children of all ages and abilities. Engaging activities for the children to participate in. Will continue to check for future events. Diolch.

User

Such a massive improvement to the building and the space. A really great and inspiring collection - so colourful. I really enjoyed and has made me feel that I want to come back and see the next collection.

Nice tea and cakes too!

User

Stunning and intelligent restoration which is an asset for the city. Great space for designing learning experiences.

User

My first visit to the gallery yesterday and it definitely won't be my last, everything about this gallery is just fabulous! From the uncluttered curating (which was just perfect) to all the amazing artwork showcased in this fantastic building!

User

My children and I love the new Glynn Vivian art gallery! We enjoyed walking around the gallery and then taking part in the children's Leonardos inventions workshop which they really enjoyed! Richard and Dan were so great with the children and had thought of lots of ideas to inspire and engage them. They particularly loved drawing on the big board with projections- fab idea!! We finished off our visit with a lovely big hot chocolate with marsh mallows and cream in the cafe! We look forward to participating in future workshops!

User

I really enjoyed visiting the Glyn Vivian. The Leonordo di Vinci exhibition was well worth seeing. The Art Gallery has beautiful pictures, china, and modern art and is well worth visiting.

After concluding my visit, I had a refreshing cup of Earl Grey on Coast Cafe on the ground floor of the Gallery. I look forward to my next visit to the Glyn Vivian.

User

First visit today since the reopening. It's a really exciting new space now and shows off the work to full advantage. The Leonardo da Vinci exhibition was very atmospheric. Loved the Glynn Vivian story, you can really feel the connection with him now. Looking forward to more visits.

User

A fantastic Art Gallery featuring both famous international and local artists - loads of workshops and events - particularly like the workshops for children

User

Really enjoyed the visit to the Art gallery, the renovations and modern extension. Felt that the whole place lacked enough art to give an enriched and broad 'Art' experience though. (Too many empty rooms and spaces) Use our contemporary range of wonderful local artists ( who already exhibit outside of Wales ) to promote the gallery and give a Swansea/Welsh perspective.

Why not introduce a Welsh version of the 'Royal Academy Summer Exhibition' to encorage up and coming artists on a grand scale ? Great to see the return and look forward to future exhibitions.

User

Loved the 'new look' (post renovation). However did feel that it needs to broaden the appeal. Fully support idea of RA Summer Exhibition featuring Welsh artists. Also take a leaf out of Waterfront Museum & make it less 'static'. Disappointed with coffee shop - limited seating, no character & pricy

User

I am so glad the art gallery is open again but I was so disappointed at how little art was on display (especially compared to all the ceramics). So many of my favourites from before the refurbishment are not out. We came as a family to do our own drawing of our favourite piece and really struggled to find 3 paintings we liked. Come on Glynn Viv! We know you've got some beautiful work in storage. Please can we see it??? The refurb is beautiful by the way.

User

First time I had been there since the Canaletto exhibition in the 90's, but it was well worth a visit. Specifically went for the Leonardo Da Vinci exhibit, but 2 hours going around the whole gallery.

User

Lovely to see the Leonardo da Vinci drawings but not enough going on elsewhere in the gallery for me to think of visiting on a regular basis.

User

In part, this is a brilliant gallery but I was sorely disappointed with the exhibition to celebrate the centenary since women began to win their battle for suffrage... A man had been chosen to curate this exhibition and he had filled it with picture of women, mostly by men... Speaking frankly... Wtf.

A day or two ago I wandered round the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery. In the Garden room I browsed the arts activity leaflets to see what's on. An attractive postcard caught my eye. I read it. I was astonished - an invitation to a children's art prize-giving ceremony, 1989. I turned it over. It seemed genuine. Sponsored by David Evans department store. Well, they'd be closed since I don't know when. Midland bank. How long since they were renamed? Then a doubt - maybe it's some stupid conceptual art rubbish? I took one and did some online detective work: 27th May 1989 really was a Saturday. Ms L Aldron had been a councillor from 1976 -90. 655006 was the old Glynn Vivian phone number. The talented child artist illustrating the card, Ms Al-Salihi, has gone on to be an actress.

I suppose they were in a cupboard and put out by mistake. Yet I can't help imagining staff straightening and shuffling round barely changing piles of leaflets for god knows how long.

Anyway, thought you might like to know.

I was really looking forward to seeing the new and improved gallery so joined the crowds on Saturday afternoon, it was busy and buzzing and great to see,we looked at various types of art.

Then went to see the long awaited Da Vinci's sketches, we were up to our fourth sketch when a security guard came up behind us saying you can't touch,no touching really loudly (there was no touching),we carried on around, got half way through and there was the guard again, no touching! At this point we left but heard him doing it again to another family. Very disappointed.

Also too many videos, where's the actual art? Painting, Sculptures etc.I only hope this will all be improved over time.

I will visit again if only to see Da Vinci's sketches in peace.

User

I have mainly expressed my views as a comment under Richard Powell's review of the 27 Oct. We have really looked forward to the re~opening of the Glynn Vivian and were disappointed to find minimal art on display (apart notably from the beautiful Leonardo sketches and mesmerizing Turner ~ which is very well placed). So much space seems to be unused with many bare walls. I do hope that the rooms on the ground floor in particular will be used in the future to display more of the rich heritage of Wales that is within this collection.
