About Linden Hall Studio

Linden Hall Studio, is an independent, family run, contemporary art gallery in Deal, Kent.

We run an exhibition programme of 11 shows a year, featuring the very best of contemporary art, alongside a wide ranging series of events.

Linden Hall Studio Description

Linden Hall Studio opened in November 2014 after a four-year restoration of the building, which dates back to 1775. Throughout the 20th century Linden Hall was used as a Christian chapel through generations of a local family. This building, following restoration, is a superb open space over two floors now used as a gallery for artists to exhibit their work.

The gallery located in the heart of historic and picturesque Deal, is situated close to Deal Maritime Museum, St Georges Church and Deal Town Hall and within walking distance of the excellent range of independent shops that Deal has to offer. Linden Hall Studio is privately owned by Heather and John Corley, with the exhibition & events programme directed by their son Myles.

The Gallery team is happy to discuss the art on display or deal with enquiries including hire of the exhibition space.

Gallery open Tuesday – Saturday 10am – 4pm. Sunday 11am - 2pm.

Eileen Cooper OBE RA CENTRE OF STAGE 3 drawing... 56 x 76 cm
As featured within our current, Winter Group Show, which is open reopens from tomorrow January 4th, until it closes on January 26!
Eileen Cooper was born 1953 in Glossop, in the Derbyshire Peak District. She studied at Goldsmiths College from 1971-1974 being in the cohort of students who were selected by Jon Thompson. Senior members of staff at that time included Bert Irvin RA, Basil Beattie RA and Michael Craig Martin RA. She went on to study Painting at the Royal College of Art under Peter de Francia, graduating in 1977 and soon began to exhibit her work.
During the 1980s she became a major figure, well known and regarded for her strong and passionate figuration. Cooper has always taught part time in numerous institutions including St Martins, Royal College of Art and the Royal Academy Schools. She became a Royal Academician in 2001 and served as Keeper of the Royal Academy between 2010 and 2017, making her the first woman in the history of the Academy to do so.
Sometimes described as a magic realist, Eileen Cooper brings an unapologetically female perspective to her subject-matter, which encompasses sexuality, motherhood, life and death. Her richly diverse images, simultaneously bold and tender, reveal a range of feeling that is both deeply engrossing and readily accessible, yet still very much part of contemporary art practice.
Throughout her career Cooper’s work has contained a strong autobiographical element. However, her vision is always more allegorical than anecdotal, her concerns and experiences as relevant and timeless as those of the human spirit itself.
A monograph on Eileen Cooper RA written by Martin Gayford was published in May 2015. Eileen Cooper: Between the Lines is available at the RA Shop. In 2015 the exhibition Hide and Seek: Drawings by Eileen Cooper RA was held at the Royal Academy

Peter Clossick
Featuring ’Selfie; and one other work, within the Winter Group Show at LHS
... Selfie Peter Clossick 50 x 64 cm oil on board
“speak of the uncertainties, anxieties and mysteries of existence of our time. He makes us feel the present, the here and now of our being in the world, the joy and the anguish of life in moments of heightened sensation. This is never a simple description of the outer skin of things, but rather a multi-layered, multi-toned articulation of physical realities.”
- Journalist and Author, Corinna Lotz
Peter Clossick studied at Camberwell School of Art and Goldsmiths College during the early 1970s and has been engaged in professional fine art practice since. He is a member and Past President of The London Group an artist collective established in 1913 and also a member of The New English Art Club under the Federation of British Artists. On Saturday, December 15th Linden Hall Studio celebrated its 4th anniversary!
After 11 Shows around 60 Artists, 5000 emails and plenty of phone calls later, we have reached the end of another year at LHS! Culminating in our Winter Group Show, the biggest we have ever put together at the gallery, featuring 100 artists across the entire spectrum of contemporary art , from New York to New Cross!
Over the course of the year we have had group shows , two handers and solo ventures ...at the gallery. As well as all our exhibitions, our events have been a wonderful new addition, trying to become a centre for the visual arts with drawing classes, masterclasses, monthly film screenings as well as pop up events, such as the macmillan coffee morning which raised 5000 pounds, as well as becoming a face of Southeastern rail!
Next year we hope to expand on all of these, so please stay tuned with what we are trying to do at LHS!
Wishing you a very Merry Christmas and I look forward to seeing you all in February for the Liz Mott photography show, Another Real Deal

Clyde Hopkins (1946 - 2018) PAPRIKA COLLAGE PAINTING acrylic on canvas... 30 x 25 cm
Clyde Hopkins Obituary - The Guardian by Mali Morris RA June 2018
'The painter Clyde Hopkins, who has died aged 71, produced fine works that were exhibited in various galleries around the UK, as well as in the US and Europe. He was also a visiting artist in many art schools during the 1970s until becoming head of painting, then of fine art, at Winchester School of Art in 1982. From 1990 to 2006 he was head of painting at Chelsea College of Art and Design, London, and he retired as emeritus professor at the University of the Arts London.
Clyde’s students adored him: they knew he was a real artist, sensed his deep appreciation of the absurd, and in his company they heard wit, wisdom and piercingly perceptive advice, usually offered with a grin. I taught at many places alongside him, but it was at Chelsea that I fully understood his skill and tact at pulling together the disparate strands emerging in art schools at that time. He saw into us all, without our noticing it, and was gentle with whatever he found.
He was born in Bexhill-on-Sea in East Sussex, to Paul Hopkins, a headteacher, and his wife, Ivy (nee Hill). He went to Barrow-in-Furness grammar school for boys and then took a degree in fine art at Reading University in the mid-1960s.
After graduating, like many of his circle of friends he was a peripatetic part-time lecturer, paid by the hour in art schools and universities across Britain. We travelled the country, visiting fine art departments as far afield as Canterbury and Hull, trying to remember which London station to get to in time on any particular morning. This meant that for half the week Clyde could be in his studio. He and I were studio neighbours in Greenwich, south-east London, for 20 years, and through the partition in the summer months came the sounds of a Test match on the radio, or the music of Glenn Gould or Brownie McGhee.
In those days, before Clyde became the first of our group to take on a “proper” full-time job at Winchester, he was making large, loosely worked, dark paintings, which were shown widely and to great acclaim, including at the Serpentine and Hayward galleries in London. Very gradually these became flatter, crisper, brilliant in hue, with increasingly complex structures, in oil paint applied with obsessive enjoyment.
By the time we moved to new studios in Deptford in 1995, the intensity of his style was absolutely his own, and it became richer and more extraordinary as the years went by.
Clyde is survived by his wife, the artist Marilyn Hallam, whom he married in 1969 after they met as student contemporaries at Reading University.'
As a gallery, we are very proud to be featuring two works within our Winter Group Show by the late, great, Clyde Hopkins.

Popped into Linden Hall to collect my beautiful print (by Leonard. Whybrow), & came out with a receipt for a Germaine Dolan. Am still shaking & flushed ( & that's not from the gym work out we'd done before). This is a great exhibition, in a wonderful Gallery. Go & see it, lovely team working there too.

One of the most varied and informative, independent galleries in Kent, a must visit if you are in the area.

Myles is the best man who makes me see art.

I am looking forward to showing my work here in October 2015. It's a surprising and superb space with great light just off the High Street. Surely it is one of the best independent galleries in Kent.
