Llanfair Caereinion Fire Station

About Llanfair Caereinion Fire Station

We are the On-Call Fire & Rescue crew covering Llanfair Caereinion and the surrounding area. Part of Mid & West Wales Fire & Rescue Service.

Llanfair Caereinion Fire Station Description

We are an entirely "On Call" station. That means every one of the crew has a "day job", either works, lives or both within 6 mins of the station, and are summoned when required by radio pager. Underneath the kit we are factory workers and farmers, council highways staff and welders, fitness instructors and tree surgeons. But we are all trained and equipped to the same standards as our Wholetime colleagues and respond to the same incidents.

We cover a large, mostly rural area from approx 5 miles West of Welshpool to the Gwynedd boundary including Llanerfyl, Llangadfan and Foel (although regularly cross as far as Mallwyd) Also 1st response to the communities of Tregynon, Adfa, Llanwyddellan, Cefn Coch, New Mills and Manafon to the south, and Dolanog, Pont Robert and half of Meifod to the North.

If you were wondering why the A458 was closed on Saturday afternoon... Articulated truck had an unintended excursion into the ditch between the Foel and Mallwyd.
3rd trip West for us of the week. Previously attended a RTC between 2 cars and a telephone pole outside the garage in Llanerfyl, and a tractor fire at a farm just across into Gwynedd.

What does everyone think of what will soon be our new look for the majority of incidents?
Our existing Fire Kit is excellent (you don't realise how good until in a hot fire training chamber) but there is an inevitable side effect that it is quite bulky and hot to wear. So for incidents that don't require the level of protection (RTCs, Special Service Calls, grass fires, etc) we are being issued a lighter weight kit.

At 5pm yesterday (Fri 18th November), 2 pumping appliances from Newtown and 1 each from Montgomery, Welshpool and ourselves at Llanfair, plus the water bowser from Llandrindod Wells were mobilised to a large barn fire near Abermule. Quick action by the first crews and the occupiers in removing machinery and fertiliser prevented the incident from escalating. The incident was scaled down at 11pm, but crews remain at the scene at the time of posting. (1st picture courtesy of Montgomery Fire Station)

One of this week's incidents. Unfortunately farmers' handler was a total loss. Our colleagues from Welshpool also attended.
The new Dräger BA sets and telemetry board got their first operational use and feedback was very positive.

Today the crew had training input on new Breathing Apparatus sets which will be replacing our old ones in November. Manufactured by Dräger, they come with built in telemetry so that the Entry Control Board is continually updated with how much air the wearer is using and other functions. A lot to learn but everyone is very impressed so far.

This afternoon we had to summon specialist assistance from Mountain Rescue to reach a sheepdog that had fallen down a mineshaft. Dog was successfully rescued and has been reunited with his owner.
