Musgrove Park Hospital Diagnostic Imaging Department Description

The diagnostic imaging department (also known as radiology and X-ray), is one of the largest departments in Musgrove Park Hospital. The majority of examinations are performed in the main department, situated on the ground floor of the Duchess Building, opposite the corridor leading to Costa and can be found by following the signs for X-Ray. In addition to this, the mammography suite can be found opposite the breast care centre in the Old Building.

The diagnostic imaging department provides a wide range of diagnostic examinations, with a variety of imaging modalities. These examinations include plain radiography (X-rays), ultrasound (US scan), fluoroscopy (X-ray screening), computed tomography (CT scan), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI scan), nuclear medicine, angiography, mammography and obstetric scanning.

The majority of examinations are performed during normal office hours, although the diagnostic imaging department does provide a number of on-call emergency, services to the hospital including radiography, CT, MRI and ultrasound scans. These scans can be requested by hospital doctors, 24 hours a day, but will only be performed in emergency cases.

The Diagnostic Imaging Department performs almost 200, 000 examinations every year (April ’10 to March ’11 we performed 196125 examinations). This large number can be broken down to show 116, 851 x-rays were taken. A further 17, 251 CT scans, 25, 950 Ultrasound scans, 11, 844 MRI scans were performed. The remaining 24, 229 examinations are made up from other imaging modalities, including the scanning of over 15, 000 “Mummy’s Tummys”!

Some of our wonderful colleagues are cycling 100km on Sunday in aid of our MRI fundraising campaign to purchase a new, much needed third MRI scanner. One of our very own radiographers is even promising to do the route twice if we can get the total over £1500! 💪🚴‍♂️

We’ve had a fantastic morning of simulation training in our interventional suite today. Our Nurses, HCA’s, Radiographers and Radiologists all play a vital role during these procedures and today we got to practice working through different emergency scenarios. Many thanks to the clinical simulation team for guiding us through each scenario.

A few patients have expressed concerns over their safety in MRI after seeing a recent article in the news. We would like to reassure patients that their safety is our utmost priority. The incident in question occurred in a country with entirely different safety legislations to the UK. Incidents in MRI are very rare, due to the strict protocols in place.
If you have an appointment and have any concerns regarding this, or any other aspect of your appointment, please feel free to contact the department. There is also an MRI patient information video available on this Facebook page.
Please note we are unable to discuss confidential patient information via Facebook.
