About Salcombe Harbour

The friendly, welcoming and safe eco-port set in one of the most beautiful locations in the south west

Salcombe Harbour Description

An eco-port which is navigable from the 'Bar' across the harbour's mouth all the way up to Kingsbridge.

The harbour and estuary provides a naturally beautiful safe haven for a wide range of recreational and leisure activities including dinghy and yawl sailing, yachting, canoeing, stand-up paddle-boarding, bathing and more. It also accommodates a small but active shell-fishing fleet which exports Salcombe crab world-wide.

It offers residents and visitors alike a very friendly and warm welcome and offers a range of marine services.

Great to see TS Royalist, the Sea Cadets flagship, in the Harbour overnight. We wish her safe passage on to Dartmouth Regatta this morning.

Boat Owners be aware that tomorrow might not be the best day to go out with gales and rain expected.

SALCOMBE HARBOUR – KINGSBRIDGE ESTUARY
LOCAL NOTICE TO MARINERS
... NO 5 OF 2018
SALCOMBE TOWN REGATTA WEEK 11th August – 18th August 2018
1: Harbour Swim - HARBOUR CLOSURE
Salcombe town Regatta cross-harbour swim will take place 07:45-08:30 Monday 13th Aug between Smalls Cove and Cliff House gardens (race start line). All traffic in the vicinity (between Mill Bay and the East Portlemouth ferry crossing) will be stopped for the duration; this will be broadcast on VHF #14 and enforced by Harbour launches.
2. Fireworks - EXCLUSION ZONE
Salcombe town regatta firework display will take place 22:00-22:20 Thursday 16th Aug off Town/Fishermans Beach. An exclusion zone of 100 metres centred on the fireworks barge (50°14’.2N 003°45’.8W) will be maintained for the duration.
FIREWORK TECHNICIANS WILL NOT COMMENCE THE DISPLAY IF THE EXCLUSION ZONE IS NOT CLEAR
We would recommend finding a suitable position to temporarily moor (alongside another boat where necessary) during the display to maintain position without the need to be underway. Anchoring will be prohibited adjacent to Town/Fishermans Beach for all vessels. Many boats and tenders will congregate for the duration of the event but we would like to remind everyone that displaying navigation lights is essential while under way after sunset – for small tenders, this may only be a torch. All vessels should exercise extreme caution navigating in a busy waterway, keeping speed and wake to a minimum whilst maintaining a good look out.

Tomorrow, Saturday 4th August is the start of the Salcombe Yacht Club Regatta followed by the Town Regatta the following week.
Please make sure that you are familiar with our Local Notice to Mariners No 2 of 2018 with regards to the racing dinghy free fairway and harbour closures. This will affect navigation 15 minutes before and 15 minutes after race starts.
SOUTH HAMS DISTRICT COUNCIL

LOCAL NOTICE TO MARINERS NO 02 OF 2018
RACING DINGHY FREE FAIRWAY
To reduce the risk of collision within Salcombe Harbour during dinghy racing, a Racing Dinghy-Free Fairway will be implemented as detailed below. Generally this will be used to facilitate Saturday afternoon race starts and those within the August Regatta programmes but may be used whenever an event requires vessel traffic management :
1. The Harbour Authority will establish a temporary fairway along the western shore of the harbour during dinghy racing. This temporary fairway is for vessels entering and leaving the harbour. Dinghies involved in racing must keep clear of the fairway.
2. The fairway’s limits will be 50º14’.01N 003º46’.02W to 50º14’.2N 003º45’.8W and its northern to southern limits marked by yellow buoys with X top mark
3. The Harbour Authority will broadcast the fairway’s establishment on VHF#14 and a yellow flashing light on the Salcombe Yacht Club watch house (50º14’.12N 003º46’.52W) illuminated.
4. The racing dinghy free fairway will be established from at least five minutes before the start of the first race start until at least five minutes after the start of the last race, but may be kept in force for longer if traffic density dictates.
5. The racing dinghy free fairway will not be established two hours either side of low water when the predicted tidal height at low water is less than 1.5m. On such occasions when the harbour is busy and there are a large number of dinghies racing, Salcombe Yacht Club will either reschedule the race start or use a committee boat start.
6. The racing dinghy free fairway will not be shortened.

... NO 04 OF 2018
MERLIN ROCKET WEEK 07 to 13 JULY 2018
1. Salcombe Yacht Club will host the annual Merlin Rocket week between the above dates. Up to 65 racing dinghies are expected to participate and the race start line (ORANGE) is expected to be congested right across the width of the harbour.
2. To reduce the risk of collision within Salcombe Harbour during race starts, the Harbour Authority will halt ALL traffic movement within the harbour from 10 minutes prior to the race starting until approximately 5 minutes afterwards between an area north of Mill Bay / Woodville Rocks and south of the East Portlemouth ferry crossing / entrance of Batson Creek (within the RED box). This is in addition to LNTM No 02 describing the Dinghy-Free Fairway which will be in use before and after this closure (YELLOW).
3. These closures will be broadcast on VHF #14. Vessels with an urgent need to transit this area should in the first instance call ‘Salcombe Harbour’ on VHF #14 to request permission. If granted, the Merlin race start will be postponed.
4. Nothing in this LNTM shall exonerate any vessel, or the owner, master or crew thereof, including racing dinghies, from the consequences of any neglect to comply with the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea.

We would like to remind everyone that swimming is NOT PERMITTED within the estuary. It is extremely dangerous due to the amount of boating activity here and it is very difficult to spot a swimmer from a boat. Please make sure that you only swim alongside the beaches.

... BASS MONITORING PROGRAMME
Plymouth University are conducting a project aimed at understanding how bass use inshore areas and will contribute to improving local management of these fish. As part of the project a number of mooring buoys have been laid to monitor and record data regarding European bass movement within the approaches to Salcombe Harbour. These are marked in accordance with the guidance available for laying gear on the sea bed and in agreement with Trinity House.
1. Three moorings have been placed in the approaches to Salcombe Harbour (within the Range), identifiable by unlit yellow buoys approximately 150cm in diameter marked “Plymouth University + buoy number” at the following positions:
S12 50° 13.073 N 03° 45.901 W
S13 50° 12.892 N 03° 46.344 W
S14 50° 12.751 N 03° 46.827 W
On deployment these buoys were red in colour but will be replaced by yellow ones as soon as practically possible.

2. Mariners are advised to stay clear of these marks and not to use them for mooring purposes. The positioning of these Marks does not fall within the white sector of the leading line into Salcombe across the bar.

Look out for Anna Turns and her daughter Ella doing the 'Paddle and Pick' Plastic Clever Challenge in the Harbour today and tomorrow. Salcombe - let's be #PlasticClever There are also two South Devon AONB beach cleans taking place - today at Batson (meeting at 10am at Batson village) and tomorrow at Scoble (meeting at 10am at Whitestrand Carpark). Really proud of what is being done to reduce plastics/improve ecotourism.

A big well done to our Boat Park attendant Steve. This shows great progress in our beautiful Harbour.

What a beautiful place

User

Visited the area for a possible manager's job at the factory shop due to be open end of September. The lady in the tourist information centre was really helpful in helping us locate where it's opening on island street. Also nice pasty and a coffee in a little dele. Scenery Beautiful but have to agree parking is limited.

User

So pretty and the harbour master team was so helpful in finding us a mooring

User

Lovely placed filled with nice shops! Had fish n Chios bravely on the harbour. They were the best I've had for a long time. Had a lovely stop at the Ferry Inn a lovely view from the beer garden.

User

Lovely place, went for the very 1st time and it was a glorious day for March even left out coats in the car & had a ice cream sitting by the sea. Parking is a total nightmare though we'd been round the town 3 times till we spotted someone coming out of a 2 hour slot. Would like to of stayed in the town for longer but couldn't. Wouldn't go again just because of the parking.

User

Lovely picturesque harbour and estuary. Views are really pretty, from all parts of town, quaint shops, dog friendly, it was quite busy so we done the Park & Ride, easy 5 to 10 minutes in to town, dog allowed on the bus which was great.

When you think of lovely Devon this is what you mind conjures up. Would definitely recommend this beautiful place to visit. Was about a 40 min drive from the cottage we stayed in at Ilsington.

User

Love salcombe! only 2 hours away and our ideal retreat! Car parking a nightmare unless staying in a swanky hotel. All shops very friendly and chatty... except one interiors shop.. after 3 visits ive never even got as much as a " hello" so bypass it now. Salcombe trading company lovely and always a warm welcome and the little home shop along the road that is full of white and grey stock and a Lovely doggy. shops all within a ten minute stretch and great beaches when tide is out. Tried all the restaurants and pubs now. all great!! Love it!! Great walk to gara rock and back and Winkin prawn fabulous! Handbag shop lady lovely and love Dick and Wils restaurant. Just come back from our 2nd break this year, had an amazing time. Camped at Higher Rew, fab campsite. Just love everything about the place, so family friendly , lovely shops , restaurants & lovely people. See you all again soon.

User

Idyllic place to visit. Plenty of little shops to wander into. Parking not clever, best yo park up.and get the park an ride down to the main part. Be careful though and do not do what we did and ended up with a £35 fine because the sign for disable parking was not really visible.xx

User

I loved Salcombe it's such a pretty place. Lunch by the water is highly recommended just grab a sandwich or roll from one of the local cafe's and sit yourself down. Lovely place lovely people

User

I love this quaint, pretty place except for one MAJOR detail. Car parking is a complete nightmare. The carpark allows you one hour with no returns which makes it impossible for leisurely shopping or a long lunch. We booked lunch at an expensive hotel primarily because it offers valet parking and that enabled us to shop and explore but - because of the cost of lunch - it works out more than parking in the middle of Chelsea or Mayfair! The town really needs to sort this out.

User

Has to be one of the most enchanting small towns in England oozing charm and character, definitely well worth the drive.

User

First time to Salcombe, loved it... lovely views and great shops. Would definitely recommend if on holiday. We used park and ride, which was very reasonable and less stressful than parking in town. Great little old fashioned sweet shop, which sells tasty fudge. Every shop we went into was friendly and helpful.

Egremont help please

I refer to the briefing note issued by the Egremont Trust. Please consider the wider community - spread across the UK - who value and use the Egremont when they can.

She is a unique asset to the youth and adult sailing community.

Her presence has generated cash in the businesses of Salcombe and Kingsbridge.

When I visit I consciously spend my money in Salcombe on beer and food and accommodation and ice creams and magazines and sailing kit if I need it.

I trust that you have consulted with the business community in the town on the impact her temporary absence has caused.

She does you no harm and generates a lot of good.

Your risk is small and the consequences of maritime loss (damage to other craft, salvage) fully insurable.

Above all, in a world dominated by google, Amazon, Tesco, and megacorps, why not maintain and preserve something valued, respected, well known, and unique?

Does Salcombe have to become just another High Street retail opportunity just like everywhere else?

Keep the Egremont.
