Answer to our #Sundayquiz It's a nest of magpies! #SundayFunday #Sunday #swwr #wildifefact When seen close-up, a magpies black plumage takes on an altogether more colourful hue with a purplish-blue iridescent sheen to the wing feathers and a green gloss to the tail.

Fred and George Badger are asking for your help.
"Hi everyone Fred and George Badger here. We really need your help! Secret World Wildlife Rescue has seen an increase in the amount of Hedgehogs admitted to their hospital recently. These Hedgehogs are arriving at Secret World, dehydrated, under weight, sick, injured and orphaned. These Hedgehogs have been (and will be) needing a lot of care and that doesn't come cheap. Vets bills, medication, fluids, food, bedding, cleaning p...roducts and waste removal are all costs involved in looking after the animals at Secret World.
Secret World really need donations to rescue rehabilitate and release all the animals that come in. They rescue over 5,000 animals every year and that costs a lot of money so please give generously, even a small amount can make a big difference and without your donations Secret World could not save the thousands of animals that pass through their doors every day."

We are very pleased that the BBC Breakfast Show highlighted our need for food and donations for hedgehogs because of the number of wildlife casualties that we receive, having over 50 hedgehogs in at the moment. Due to the large of numbers of hedgehogs that come in to our care, we microchip to ensure that the correct hedgehog is returned to its own territory. This increases our costs, including veterinary care, medications and heating etc. Our hedgehogs are fed on cat food and... cat biscuits ( which is good for their teeth) . They are also occasionally given a sprinkle of mealworms as roughage as there is little benefit in this kind of food. It is just like the roughage of insects and beetles that they would normally eat. Unfortunately the footage showing a hedgehog eating a huge pile of mealworms was not filmed at our centre and does not follow our feeding protocol.

We found a very young pigeon that had been attacked by a cat. After keeping it for a couple of days we took it to the vets who treated it for free and then it went to Secret World. They have just let us know it is fine and will be released with others soon. Thank you Secret World

User

The summer bank holiday fun day on 28th August was brilliant for our little ones. The girls enjoyed the hedgehog hunt and loved making hedgehog seed bombs for the garden. We loved sitting on the grass in the sun listening to the singer and drinking summer punch 😊☀️

User

Me and my family went to see santa her today and must say I was very impressed and would like to say thank you!! Very well organised, relaxed and that made it enjoyable. It was nice we could see some of the animals and brought out the barn owl and gave a little talk about them. Would definitely recommend.

Last night I found an injured baby Squirrel, so I phoned them up for advise. Was told to take it down my local vets and they would pick it up this morning.

That is exactly what they did, I"m so grateful for their dedication in helping a Squirrel, which some people regard as vermin but to me are beautiful creatures.

Thank you Secret World and their dedicated, team you do an amazing job!!

I just wanted to say what a great day we had at the 'Wild and Deadly' Show today! Myself and a friend came with our 5 children aged from 6 to 13. All of them thoroughly enjoyed the hourly shows which were entertaining as well as educational! And a MASSIVE bonus that you had the opportunity to hold some of the insects afterwards. A big hit for everyone and such value for money which is hard to find these days, especially in the school holidays. This will definitely be on the top of our 'to do' list next year! Well done to all those involved!

I found a very young badger on the side of the road in Bristol. At first he appeared dead but then he opened his eyes. He was beautiful. I wrapped him up in my coat and took him to the local vets. They transported him to Secret World. I had a phone call later saying that he had was underweight and dehydrated but he had been fed and was doing well. Thank you Secret World for helping him and all the other animals that you help.

User

I am so thankful to secret world, a pigeon flew into my bathroom and the window flipped over and shut on it's wing. It was hurt and scared. I put it in a box on my balcony, and lifted the lid to feed it and it literally walked off the balcony, fell from quite high, survived and went for a 5min walk in the park. I went and caught it and brought it indoors this time, and Pete and Mavis from Secret World came within an hour and took him to the vets. Thank you for appreciating all life...and thanks for the quick response!

Found a baby field vole whose parents and siblings had been mangled by the combine harvester in the wheat fields close to my house. By a miracle this baby was still alive. I brought it home and myself and my daughter fed it 2 hourly with warm goats milk delivered on a paint brush. Amazingly she was still going strong after 36 hours. Decided that she needed specialist help and rearing as it is OK down 2 hourly feeds for a couple of days but working full time as well would of been hard. Rang Secret World and they were amazing - got a rescue driver to collect her that evening and gave some great advice and support. I will miss her but i know she will get the best chance in life from these guys. Many thanks to you all for the tireless and wonderful job you do

User

Fab day out on Sunday it was our first visit here and most certainly will not be the last. We found out something educational and that was to squeeze our recycled tin cans together so nosey hedgehogs don't get their pines stuck in the opening. I think it would be really educational to come to Berrow School to teach our youngsters how to look after the wildlife.

User

Drove all the way from Chepstow to deliver a injured Dove, got a hug from the staff for my doing what I did. I can’t see any animal suffer and would do it again. It’s a amazing place and full of all types of wildlife and the staff do a fantastic job, well done to all of you.

Back in August 2016 I found a wood pigeon squab and took them to Secret World, they gave me a reference number so I could call up to see how s/he was doing (s/he was released Back into the wild in October 2016) and were able to tell me everything about how s/he was doing and their rehabilitation. It was wonderful to know s/he was in safe, knowledgeable hands and growing stronger and doing so well. Everybody there I spoke to (I don't remember if it was the same person each time) sounds like they really care for the animals in their care and said thank you to me for bringing the squab to them.

After finding a young dehydrated hedgehog a month ago the guys at Secret World Wildlife Rescue called us to say that Inmate #24602 was ready for release. Given that we have recently seen several hedgies back in our garden after an absence of 12 months, absolutely we said.

So, at 21.55 last night #24602, now known as Harriet, was released into the world. Good luck Harriet and many thanks to the team at Secret World Wildlife Rescue who have the skills and facilities to do such great work. Long may you survive for our wildlife.

No 5* rating this year :( Very disappointed not to see hedgehogs at the Silver Easter Bonanza. I'm sure there's a good reason for it but I've not seen one in the wild for years, at least a live one. It was really my main reason for coming and, now that there's no bus service, it took a major effort to get there. I shall continue to support your work, but from a distance.

I suspect that for many kids it's become an exotic beast that they will only ever see on a video screen, so I guess I'm lucky to have fed one (and picked him up from my front room and put him back in the garden). Despite the popular belief, video is no substitute for seeing the real thing.

It was disappointing to not have talks about out the badgers or see them .very flat atmosphere less going on compared with other years but was still lovely to see the foxes deer kestrel and owls .I've been coming for many years so it was just a bit strange to not to see the ferrets turtle greenhouse and paulines garden .not many badger people were there .the vegan stall was great and good to be able to meet Martin hughes games was lovely .im missing alot of the volunteers who have been their years .could do with more seats in food talk area .big screen showing rescued animals Web Cam of the baby badgers in between talks at main stage would have been good.we spent alot of time trying to find things to do .less ascess to all areas was disappointing .

I still support secret world and you do amazing work with wildlife .just explain honestly to people why the badger bonanza has stopped .

User

I never made it to the opening day last weekend but certainly wouldn't mind a look around when the next one occurs.

User

I wasn’t amused by their reaction when I phoned for advise

An adder was in the road outside my house it seemed really distressed and I didn’t want it to get run over or someone bitten

So I phoned for advise and all I got was ‘ what do you want me to about it ‘

That was bloody helpful !!!
