Adding importance to the Iron we forget to dig. Below are swords, spears and other weapons. There are pictures of other iron Viking grave goods from 800 to 1150 Ad
The images are from Stockholm Sweden and Bilka
Grave goods were a depiction of the persons life. If they were a smith then his tools would be included. You would expect to find swords only if they were a warrior. Essentially grave goods were the everyday tools a person would use in there lives.

More on good old iron Iron was used a lot for every day items and weapons photos from Viking museums Stockholm Iron has been used since 800 bc so it’s not surprising when your out detecting that your picking up and discarding iron. Look a little closer and some of those things could easily be of great interest. Sections from swords or Mail are easily over looked. The pictures of skulls dressed in Mail give a gruesome discovery but reveal much about how a person died and what happened in that location. Please take a good look at the pictures Kind regards Andy

Roman transport I have written this to help you understand that many of the iron items we find might have significant importance. Romans used a significant amount of iron in their everyday use. Horse drawn carriages, transport barges, and house hold goods. I hope you will think twice before disregarding iron items once you have read my posts.

A few more coins from 4th C Constantine Emperor. The Emperor who came to fame at the age of 17 and built Constantinople. He then comes to Britain to meet his ageing and ailing father. His victory battle at the river Tiber ( Rome) was against a larger force. The why he one is very interesting?

Another hidden gem-Holy Well Healing Sulphur spring of Somerset.
You maybe a modern day detectorist, but many of you will be hooked on uncovering the past history of the land and its people which of course are our ancestors A Holy Well (sulphur Spring) or sacred spring, is a small body of water emerging from underground and can be attributed to either a Pagan or Christian context, often both. Holy wells were frequently pagan sacred sites that later became Christianized.
The ...term ‘holy well’ is commonly referred to any small water source (i.e. not a lake or river, but including pools and natural springs), which has some significance in the folklore of the area where it is located, whether in the form of a particular name, or associated legend, the attribution of healing qualities to the water through the numinous presence of its guarding spirit or Christian saint, or a ceremony or ritual centred on the well site. In Christian legend, the water is often said to have been made to flow by the action of a saint, a familiar theme especially in the hagiography of Celtic saints.” I hope you find this information interesting.

This is an amazing 1300C chest. We often discard iron nails without too much thought while out detecting . Take a look at these fascinating nail heads aren't they just amazing!! Finding these nails and other things could be close by. Rember a chest like this would have been packed with valuable belongings. Happy hunting

Our Finds on Friday are interesting. A Tudor button along with a few smaller buttons with very fine detail. No great value, it's more about the history.

A lead fishing weight. This weight was found in the bottom of the Brent knoll river basin, known as the river Siger. The person who lost it while fishing, did so more than 2000 years ago. We know this because the sea retreated almost 2000 years ago. I do like the history behind the metal detecting finds.
