After only a slight increase in bike sales and registrations in the plate-change month of September it was encouraging to see a return to double-digit growth in October, says the NMDA.
Steve Latham observed that the total market for motorcycle registrations increased by 1059 new machines compared with the previous October, giving an overall 14.2% increase in the market. This compared favourably with the 2015 year-to-date growth of 12.4%.
... The big volume gains came from the naked and scooter derivatives which improved their growth by 22.3% and 18.8% respectfully. "Many of these machines are in the 125cc sector that is still gaining sales from young new riders and commuters," Latham said.
"With larger motorcycles the uplift in sales is coming from pent-up demand for the 651-1000cc machines, where more experienced owners are benefiting from the continuing low finance rates and personal lease programmes promoted by the manufacturers.
"In October the market leaders were Honda and Yamaha which both benefit from having an attractive range of 125cc motorcycles but in third place was the budget brand Lexmoto that continues to secure entry-level sales into the market-place at almost double the rate of its nearest competitor for this month, Triumph. Lexmoto registered 841 machines while Triumph's total was 442. There has been much comment in the press and much tutting from traditional motorcycle dealers but Lexmoto’s value offer in the market-place is certainly taking customers away from the established motorcycle brands.
"After a sluggish September, the bounce-back in October is encouraging and dealers feel confident for a positive year-end result, Latham concluded.
